How To Make Healthy Desserts

Receiving a diagnosis of diabetes usually means a change in lifestyle and diet. If you are like me--I have a terrible sweet tooth!--I had this mental image of all things sweet and good disappearing from my diet. Imagine my surprise to discover this is not true. In fact, doctors and nutritionists recommend eating fresh fruit. And there are many ways to make delicious diabetic desserts. As with all foods, we diabetics have to watch our portions and even more so with sweets. Do not make this cheesecake and eat it all before bedtime! But incorporated into a healthy diet, you should be able to enjoy it. With its sugar-free ingredients and fresh fruits, it is healthy and tasty enough for anyone!

DIABETIC'S LEMON CHEESECAKE

1 1/4 graham cracker crumbs*

1/4 cup Splenda granular

1/3 cup butter, melted

1 pkg (3-oz) sugar-free lemon gelatin mix

2/3 cup boiling water

2 bars (8-oz each) light cream cheese

6-oz. lite/firm silken tofu

grated rind of 1 lemon

juice of 1 lemon

1 cup sugar-free frozen whipped topping, thawed

Fresh fruit of your choice, optional

In a small mixing bowl combine the graham cracker crumbs, Splenda, and melted butter until mixed together well. Using the back of a large spoon, press the mixture on the bottom and up the sides of an 8-inch springform pan. Chill the crust for about ten minutes.

In a blender container mix the lemon gelatin mix and the hot water; slowly add in the cream cheese and the tofu. Continue to mix until smooth. Pour the mixture into a large mixing bowl and add the lemon rind, lemon juice and the thawed topping. Pour into the prepared pan, smoothing the top. Chill for 4 hours or more. Before serving garnish with more whipped topping and fresh fruit/fruits of your choice, if desired.

*If you cannot use crumbs made from graham crackers, make your crumbs from sugar-free butter cookies or sugar-free vanilla wafers.

Serves 12.

Enjoy!

How To Get Long Healthy Hair

Once you get past the "growing out stage" and are making an attempt desperately to grow length on you hair your scared to death to induce a haircut for worry of setting you back an entire month on your mission.

However then it looks your hair simply stops growing at a certain point. . .
Hair grows from the roots a mean of 1/two " per month. This growth does not stop merely as a result of your hair gets a certain length. Probabilities are as your hair is growing from the roots, however it's breaking off at the ends just as fast!Keeping the ends of your hair in an exceedingly healthy state is key to growing long beautiful hair.

In fact you would like to get regular trims. How typically very depends on your hair there's no magic number. I might say at least every 3 month get one/two in. trim. However a good take a look at is when you sweep your hair if it appears to "catch"the comb bristles on the previous couple of inches then it is time for a trim. The brush catching your ends will solely snap off your hair and will actually snap the hairs off mid shaft leaving very little annoying stray hairs making your hair look frizzy and dry and scaling down the ends of your hair.

And following that note you need to own a sensible brush that does not injury your hair!A large paddle brush with a cushioned base and versatile bristles is ideal. Build certain the brush you're using is made for the task!A vent brush made for blow drying is created to grip wet slippery hair with rigid bristles. They're not created for detangling and brushing dry long hair and can solely lend to breakage problems.

Don't wash your hair each day. The less wear the additional healthy length you may get. If you've got issues with oil use a dry hair shampoo in between shampoos and don't bring your conditioner all the way to your roots. You can even use a pair of totally different conditioners!Use a lighter conditioner at your roots down to the base of your neck and then apply a heavier deep repairative conditioner from your neckline down on the ends of your hair. This means your ends get the moisture and nutrition they need while not making your hair look greasy and flat at the roots.

Avoid tight ponytails. The constant pressure on one bound point on the hair shaft will lead to breakage. I have thick however baby fine terribly heavy hair to my waist and I swear by Goodys Keep Place pony tail holders. They need very little rubber grips that hold hair so you don't should tie them as tight. You'll be able to pick them up at any Wal-Mart or Target.
Stay out of the heat!Avoid as a lot of blow drying and warmth styling as possible. Every day heat styling is an excessive amount of!Continually use a heat styling protector below your flat and curling irons.

Don't over color your hair. A lot of chemicals = Less hair. Keep as close to natural to maximize your growth potential.
Listen to your hair, it may be attempting to tell you one thing!

If your hair looks to fall out excessively or your hair is growing slower than the half inch a month average. . . check together with your doctor regarding a doable vitamin deficiency. I apprehend a ton of people swear by over the counter pre natal vitamins for hair and nail growth however too much of a good issue will be dangerous therefore build sure to check along with your doctor before you begin a vitamin regiment. If you've got something wrong together with your body, your hair is one of the primary signals of your body skimping on un- necessary bodily functions to repair itself somewhere else. Those with hair growth issues embody individuals with heart problems, blood pressure problems, diabetes, hormonal problems, thyroid imbalance and several different serious problems therefore don't be afraid or feel silly for remarking your hair to your doctor.

  2. QUESTION:
How to get long, healthy hair?
I want to grow my hair out to be long, shiney, strong, and healthy. I used to have long hair but it was not very shiney, and frayed.

How do I get it to be healthy and strong?

    • ANSWER:
Ok.. So for the long hair it is good to braid your hair at night ( tightly ) before you go to bed. This will help your hair grow, but it still might take some time. Those pills for growing your hair don't work and aren't good for your health. Also putting mayonaise in your hair is good for health and shine. Not too often but let it sit in your hair for a little while and then rinse. When you wash your hair use your shampoo in your scalp near the roots , but when using your conditioner only use it from like halfway down because that's where the dead hair is at. If you use conditioner at the roots it will cause your hair to look greasey. Another tip is don't wash your hair everyday. I know this sounds gross, but it's really not healthy for your hair. Plus keep the ends trimmed to keep your ends from being split. It might seem like you are getting rid of what you are trying to grow, but you're actually helping your hair grow by cutting off the dead ends and it will help your hair look healthier. Hope this helps.

  3. QUESTION:
How to get longer hair faster?
Well I know this is a silly question because there is no magic shampoo. I just have to be healthy I know. But my hair is curly so it grows even slower. I don't do any damage whatsoever but do you have any tips & tricks or good vitamins to take?
I want hair to my waist and it's just past my shoulders now.

  4. QUESTION:
how can i get long healthy long hair?
My hair is okay right now but i want to get smooth soft healthy hair. Its up to my arm pits and it has two layers. I haven't dyed my hair or have it chemically straightened or something like that. It's a natural brown and curly-ish. I am getting my hair trimmed next thursday. How much hair do i ask to get cut off for the split ends. What products do i use to get rid of frizziness? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
One of the best things you can do to have healthy long hair is to never use a hair brush on it while it is wet! I always use a wide tooth comb. (I have straight long hair.) This is not a commercial for Sally's but that is where I get my comb (for like .00!). It is black and has teeth that are some longer and some a little shorter but anything with wide teeth would be better than a brush. All of my grand kids call it my magic comb. The reason to use a comb is that a hair brush stretches your hair especially when it is wet, that is a delicate time to work with your hair. Another thing that I do is I get all of the tangles out before I wash it then loosely braid my hair and wash the crown then allow the shampoo to float through my braid as I rinse it and allow it to come undone. I always use cream rinse on the length of my hair but I rarely put cream rinse on the crown of my head. When I know I am going to be in the wind I braid my hair so it doesn't get big rats in it! I trim off about a half inch every month or so. Also when I comb it I DO NOT start at the crown of my head! I start at about 2-3 inches from the ends of my hair... comb out the tangles then I go up to about 6 inches and comb through it again and so on!!Hope this helps!!

  5. QUESTION:
Which is better to have LONG, healthy hair: Relaxed or natural?
I'm a 14 year old girl with African hair. I have been relaxing it since I was at least 6 years old. Before I started relaxing it, my hair was pretty long and full (past my shoulders). But as I started getting it relaxed, it became shorter and now it barely grazes my shoulders, and it doesn't seem healthy to me. I want my hair to be really long and healthy. To get long hair, should I keep relaxing my hair, or go back to natural? If I do go back to natural, how do I straighten it? Thank you :)

    • ANSWER:
Your best option would be to quit relaxing your hair and let it go back to natural. Choose to use a flat iron with a good heat protectant spray instead. If you don't have to use the flat iron on 450-500 degree settings would also be better.
Also keep in mind that the chemicals in relaxers are very harsh. Not only on your hair, but your health. Make no mistake, that even the no-lye relaxers still have a small amount of lye in them. Lye was originally used to unclog and eat the hair out of your drains. No doubt that it would not eventually eat through to your hair bonds.

  6. QUESTION:
How do I get and maintain really healthy, long hair?
I don't have unhealthy hair and I already have long hair that is really curly and strawberry blonde. However, are their any suggestions to keep my hair healthy and at it's best? I would really appreciate it.

    Ps. Any shampoo suggestions?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Nutrition is probably the single most important thing for you. As your hair gets longer, malnutrition in even the loosest sense can show up with split ends and otherwise undesirable qualities. As far as cleaning goes, shampoo is really only meant for the scalp, but you should definitely look into conditioner, which is directed toward the hair, to keep it healthy.

  8. QUESTION:
How to maintain healthy long hair?
i have verrrry long hair, almost down to my rear end. today, i went to go get a hair cut and i told my hairdresser to just cut enough off to take off the dead ends. she took off about 5 inches of hair. i was kinda upset, but it had to come off. now that my ends are split-end free and very healthy looking, what are some easy ways to maintain my new healthy hair.

by the way, my hair is still veryy very long.

    thank you :)

    • ANSWER:
Ah, there is another long haired gal on here. ;) Although my hair is down to my elbows- I wish it was longer!

Here is the advice I have received and things I have heard from other longed haired women.

Don't blow dry your hair unless you must and don't straighten your hair. Both can cause heat damage and split ends. If you really want to straighten your hair for an oocasion, straighten the hair with an iron using a protective serum or use a paddlebrush and a hairdryer with protective serum, you can fine those methods online, but really only straighten hair once in a while. Other chemicals are harmful for hair too, like dying, bleaching, even using things like mousse and gels- try to avoid those, stick with natural things.

Avoid fussy hairstyles as well, ones that involve tons of bobby pins or pulling your hair in all different directions. That can damage it as well. Also, it is a good idea to wear your hair up in a bun to avoid damage from things overall (hair getting caught in car doors, brushing up against things, friction, you get the picture). The bun that causes least damage to hair is the chinese bun without the elastic band.

Here's a video of how to do that.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N54V8o-XGuE

People say that you need to trim your hair very often to grow it long. This isn't true- the only part of it that is true is dealing with the split ends since they can damage your hair. But if you choose, it can be a 'deal with it as you see them' thing, but cutting individual split ends if you see them with a good pair of scissors, about a fourth of an inch above the split. If you want to avoid trimming your hair often to grow it long again do this.

Oh, and another thing, don't wash your hair every day, since this can strip the hair of its natural oils. Do it every other day or so. Deep condition your hair about once a week, since this will keep it with a nice volume and moisterized.

      Good luck! :)

How can I get my long hair healthy again?
Over the past year i've had my brown hair highlight i'd say 3 if even 4 times, to blonde, it's absolutely dried out my once glossy healthy hair to straw, I straighten/blow dry it once a week and i'm intending to get low lights to try and bring me back to my original colour.
Would it be best to get a toner in or have low lights to minimize re-growth and would this be as damaging as highlighting it?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
I was in the same situation as you a few years ago - instead of sleek and silky, my hair looked like an unsightly bunch of straw. I was given Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner for christmas and I couldn't believe how it restored my hair - it was excellent and fully restored it back to the way it was. I FULLY recommend Paul Mitchell to you!

      hope this helps.

  13. QUESTION:
How to keep healthy long hair?
Okay, well my hair is naturally wavy, curly, and frizzy. When I straighten it, it kind of looks fried.
Would using heat protecting spray make it look shinier. And what non expensive shampoo and conditioner would be good to use to keep my hair healthy and shiny. Like, what are some tips on how to wash it better? And it's like at my shoulders, but how can I get it down past my breast faster? And still make it look shiny, and glowie, and healthy?

    • ANSWER:
I'm no expert, but getting a good, high quality straightening iron can make a huge difference. They can be like 0 or more for a salon-quality one, but if you like to straighten your hair every day, it is a good investment. Not only will it do less damage to your hair, but the straightening process will be much quicker! I don't straighten my hair that often (and I was horrified by the crackling sound of snapping, dying hair the first time I did it), but my friend has one of these amazing straighteners and my hair looks gorgeous and healthy when I use it.

If you are blow-drying and straightening your hair a lot, I would recommend getting some kind of weekly moisturizing hair mask and a moisturizing shampoo/conditioner. Don't scrunch your hair up in the shower a lot (it damages curly hair), and whenever you have time, leave your conditioner in for several minutes. Comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb in the shower with conditioner, but try not to brush it that much when it's dry, because that will make the frowziness worse.

Try not to wash your hair every day. Frequent washing takes off all the natural oils in your hair, which dries it out, making it frizzy and less shiny.

Your hair will grow at the length it grows...instead of going in for hair cuts, tell the salon people you want the dead ends TRIMMED off, but you want to keep your length, when you go in for a touch up. As tempting as it is on a budget, don't try to cut corners by taking a regular scissor to your hair. Go to a salon or get some proper scissors, or else you will damage your ends even more.

      Good luck.

  14. QUESTION:
How can i get healthy long hair?

P.S. if it makes a difference my hair is brown

    • ANSWER:
      1. Eat a balanced diet.
      2. Get regular trims when you notice split ends.
      3. Don't use blow dryers/ curling irons/ straighteners that will dry out your hair.
      4. Don't wash your hair as often as you do now- this drys out your hair.
      5. When you do wash your hair use warm, not hot, water.
      6. Be gentle when combing and brushing your hair.
      7. Put coconut or olive oil on your dry hair ends to give extra moisture.
      8. Boar hair brushes are suppose to be the best for hair.
      9. Wear hats in the sun- UV will damage hair.
      10. Keep hair from being tangled while you sleep by putting it in a loose braid.

    • ANSWER:
You can never make it fully healthy. You could help it a little bit by using leave in conditionor, epsecially at the split ends. I really do think you should cut it, it will look healthier and you will look better, trust me. Also dont use a hair straightner, curling iron, etc anymore, or atleast cut back on it. But your best bet is cutting it.

I dont know what i should do to get my hair the way I want it!

    • ANSWER:
This may sound odd, but prenatal vitamins help hair grow healthier. Regular trims are also a good thing, even though you're trying to grow it. If you leave the split ends, they just get higher and higher. I good stylist can take off just a tiny but and get the split ends before they get any worse without having to go shorter.

    • ANSWER:
Deep conditioning your hair, and conditioning it well helps keep it moisturized. Many people growing their hair or with long hair like to use olive oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil on their hair. It just depends on what makes yours happiest.

Depending on your hair texture, you will want to use either a boar bristle brush or a wide toothed comb. Nothing with pointy things or anything that can get your hair caught.

Don't wash your hair daily! Start every other day, and try to go without it longer from there. This isn't dirty rather than a way for your hair to produce natural, protective oils. I used to wash my hair every other day, and now I'm up to four where it still looks shiny and clean. :)

Horse shampoo has worked well for me from experience. I went from shoulder length to almost waist length within a summer last time, and using it again it has grown faster. However I have very thick, wavy hair, and I hear it weighs thinner hair down, so it's up to you and your experience, but I wouldn't say don't try it.

Satin pillowcases are good for keeping hair untangled. Untangled hair is happy hair.

I've heard different ways of eating have worked differently for others, but I have come to the conclusion that it's good to eat anyway. Malnourishment slows down hair growth.

As one answerer said above, biotin is pretty good. I hear some people even take pre-natal pills even if they don't have to, but this is something to discuss with a doctor.

DON'T trim your hair every 4-6 weeks. It does NOT make your hair grow faster, and it will only eliminate the growth you get and your hair will stay the same length. If your hair is too damaged and you have to, do what you're comfortable with to get it healthy again to grow out, because split ends can continue to split the hair shaft. Many people with long hair will trim every half a year.

A lot of long haired people like to put their hair in a braid or bun to avoid damage. You probably could too, and from my experience a bun works wonders. That isn't to say you shouldn't have fun styling it though!

Some people are against things like hair dyes and heat styling. Others hair can take it. It just depends on how your hair is, so that's up to you. These are all tips but not necessarily guide lines. When you find what works for you, keep at it and you'll eventually have that lovely hair. :)

  19. QUESTION:
How do grow long black healthy hair to or past your shoulders?
Well I mean African American hair. But it just seems like my hair won't grow anymore but last i remembered my hair was at my neck so its still short and I've always wanted long healthy hair. What should I do..? (Oh I also have braids but when I take them down Im going to get a much needed perm).

    • ANSWER:
Your hair is the most fragile of all hair types. They snap & break easily. So you need more TLCs than thin hair. No chemicals. No relaxers specially! No heating styling tools. Finger comb is best or use a wide tooth comb. Do what Oprah have been, going natural. Use oil or conditioner to keep them moisturized.

Go to Afro-Amer website. They have tons of tips suggestion etc. just as long as you don't buy propagandas that promises this or that for your hair. They do more harm than good.

      Ex. of one relaxer: http://monicabtheorganicstylist.wordpress.com/tag/hair-relaxers/

Keratin are not approved by the FDA. Visit their website & search for it in their web. If you're thinking about the Brazilian treatment, there's a danger about using formaldehyde, a chemical that causes cancer. The FDA does not restrict the use of that chemical in cosmetics.

A hairstylist in Portland, Or. is blowing a whistle on the treatment.
"A big red flag: About a month after she started using Brazilian Blowout on clients, Scrutton had the first nosebleed of her life."
      http://www.oregonlive.com/health/index.ssf/2010/10/
      after_hair_stylist_becomes_sus.html
(Type it in if they moved the page. "After hairstylist becomes suspicious of Brazilian Blowout, tests find formaldehyde".
At your nearest store, they now have AFRI-AMER hair products, what's good to sell there, is good for your hair type. They go through the same FDA regulations, even the so called 'natural' or 'organics', can do more harm than good for your hair. Like there are good mushrooms, there are also bad mushrooms. Go to the FDA website and learn more about 'natural'. In my email this week, there are about 15 recalls one of them is organic or natural product, recalled by the FDA. Just because they are natural, it doesn't mean you're safe. It is a billion dollar business, but they do not even give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss due to 'abuse'.

Braiding your hair is stressful, and it is not going to help make your hair grow any longer or faster.

      Source(s):
I used to own a website, and I did some research to help members with their hair, not about Afro, but I stumbled on their website that was informative.

  20. QUESTION:
How do I get and maitain healthy, long hair?

    • ANSWER:

  21. QUESTION:
How can I keep my long hair healthy?
I want to grow my hair long, for now my goal is to my lower back. Its about 22 and a half inches long and i need only eight more to get to my goal.

Will keeping it in a braid prevent breakage other things that might damage the hair?

No, I dont and never have dyed my hair.

    • ANSWER:
braiding it wont prevent damage unless its windy. just stay away from blow drying it and straighteners, things like that, which will break it off. also, use a paddle brush. Paddle brushes are flat and wide. They help in brushing long hair and for styling them. Brushing your hair with paddle brush also gives you a slight scalp massage, which helps stimulate hair growth. DONT use a rush with wire, you need something soft on your hair, that wont pull on any tangles. something like a brissle.

  22. QUESTION:
How can you keep long hair healthy?
I have long hair but it is naturally wavey and so I straighten in fairly often. In the first month that I started straightening it, I had an alarming amount of split and broken ends. It's tough to get it layered to short though because the less weight on my hair, the wavier / curlier it gets. What can I do?

    • ANSWER:
Keeping it all one length helps to cut down on styling time (which can help prevent damage), and keeping it longer also helps keep it straight because it weighs it down and natural waves are less pronounced.

Your main problem: Straightening. These irons are VERY damaging on your hair. I only use mine 2x a week max for that very reason. If you don't have to have it straight, then don't. On the weekends, just scrunch your natural curls and let it air dry (especially easy now that its summer). This is immensly helpful in keeping it healthy.

In general, go to a stylist and have them show you how to straighten it by blow drying alone. It works very good -- not the same as a straightener, but pretty close. It involves having fairly wet hair, and drying a section at a time with a flattening brush (you'll need to ask at the salon). It takes a bit more time, but you have to take care of your hair otherwise you'll just end up cutting it off from too much damage.

The first rule of straightening: the hair must be COMPLETELY dry before you touch it with the iron. If there is any steam, you are frying your cuticle and then any damage (even just combing or brushing) will cause frizz, split ends and breakage.

I also use a smoothing shampoo... I like Biolage by Matrix because it prevents knots right in the shower so you don't get knots and damage. It also helps hair to feel lighter when you have longer hair.

And finally, ask in the salon about a heat protective product... it coats the cuticle so there is less damage while styling. It can cause buildup but if you color that doesn't matter.

    • ANSWER:
The hair industry is a billion dollar business, as you've experienced, they also do not give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss due to 'abuse'.
Your hair is already half-healthy since you are not using heating tools, or chemicals! Halfway there!

I started to grow my hair long since 2003. I have good genes, and eat 3-5 servings of fresh fruits & veggies. I trim my hair 1" a month, 4" 2x a year. It's down to my knees now. You do the math. Even healthy hairs like mine get split ends due to brushing & styling. You trim them yourself, using 2" scissors, spend 5-10 mins. on a sunny day, strand by strand, section by section, sometimes you'll find splits in the middle of the strand.
Brush your hair only when it's completely dried. Never on wet hair, I don't even use a comb, nor a conditioner, unless your hair is chemically treated. Curly hair, finger comb it.

Imagine this I have hair down to my knees. , . for less tangle.

I stand in the shower and allow the water to fully wet my hair keeping my head straight up, moving the hair on my back from sides to sides, to make sure they are getting wet inside. Don't pile your hair up your head like laundry. Keep them hanging down from your head. Then I put about 2Tablespoon of shampoo on my hair, wetting it to let the suds start foaming (Garnier is best for this), while massaging my head and spreading the shampoo inside and around my head. As the shampoo falls down to the tips of my head, my head at this time is down so all the hairs are covered. As the shampoo falls down, I massage my way down until they get washed. Then, keeping my head down, I rinse. When I know all the suds are gone, I now tip my head up and move all the hair to the back of my head, continue rinsing all the suds from my head.

Then, I wash my whole body.
I turn off the water, squeezing the hair from my head to the tips of my hair. I use two towels to dry my hair to absorb most of the water, by then it's halfway dried. Blow dry for 5 mins. Brush. Style 3-5 mins. Total takes about 25-30 mins.
      Causes for dry hair:
The sun is very damaging & drying, even get sunburn, so does the hair.
Washing in hot water, if it's bad for baby skin, so does the hair.
Too many shampoos per week, 2x is enough.
Alcohol products, hair sprays or gel containing alcohol, very drying.
      Chemicals, perming, hair dyeing, chlorine.
Hair straightening tools or curling tools, even with hair protectant sprays or lotions, does not protect hair 100%.
Hair dryer, I use it but only for 5 mins per wash, per week, longer than, too drying.
My dh has that hair in HS, it's like an Afro!

Now? He started to finally listen to me, and it took him over 4 decades to listen. Yes, he's stubborn.
He was buying hair cream, in 2 hours his hair is as dry as before, so why bother? Because it was 'addicted'. Before that, he was blow-drying his hair. He also washes his hair everyday.

But he ran out, on our trip one day, and he started using Gold Bond hand lotion - leftover from his hand. Now, he washes his hair 2x a week. His hair is softer, well managed, silkier. He also just comb his hair when it's damp and air drying it.ven during a windy storm, his hair no longer gets frizzy or poffy. We did a lot of walking in the wind, cold 30 below by the time he came home they weren't still styled nicely!

  28. QUESTION:
How do I get Healthy long Hair?
My Ethnicity is white... I wash my hair everyday and use a natural boar hair's bristle brush... My hair is baby fine and about 3 inches from shoulder length I think. I only blow dry it in the winter time about everyday because I try to restrain from using it... Sometimes straighten or curl it... I take vitamins everyday... Anything else I can do?

    • ANSWER:
Wow sounds like you are doing a great job! Just make sure you eat lots of protein because that seems to make hair grow stronger and faster, good luck!

  29. QUESTION:
How do you keep long hair healthy when you curl it everyday?
I curl my hair with a curling iron daily and i always use tresemme heat tamer spray for heat protection but the ends still get split and are very dry so i always end up having to get a haircut when i want to grow it out longer. My hair is colored with lots of layers.(It's also pretty thin as well) What else do i need to do? Are there any other products i'll need? please and thank you! (:

    • ANSWER:
No matter what you do, heat will always damage it. There's not a foolproof way to avoid that. You could try lowering the heat and trying different heat products. Or you could also buy shampoos that enforce curls. They may not be as strong as the ones with heat, but they definitely look more natural and will keep your hair very healthy.

  30. QUESTION:
Girls who use hair relaxers and have long, healthy hair. How?!?
I've grown out my natural hair over the past several years. My hair is very long now and thick, due to an extremely busy schedule and desire to have my hair straight once again I want to go back to getting my hair relaxed.

What is the best relaxer and what products and techniques will keep my hair long, healthy and prevent breakage?

    • ANSWER:
I don't know ANY woman with relaxers that have long hair
      UNLESS
they relax their hair(touchups) rarely, or they haven't done it for a while (they probably just started relaxing and it's barely 1 or 2 years into it)

I think if women used texturizers or weak relaxers i don't think their hair would fall out so easily. But a lot of sellouts want STRAIGHT hair, not curl definition, so yea..that stuff is pretty strong
give it a couple of years and their hair will be falling out

Look at Beyonce's hair, very damaged, and she has stylist
      http://discoveringhair.com/blog/beyonce/Beyonce%20Real%20Hair%203.jpg

vs. Tyra's hair and she has a texturizer(and straightens her hair with a hot comb for the show) but you can't put heat on your hair often WITH chemicals because it will take out your hair, that is why she went back to wearing wigs. Tyra wants to maintain her "black girl trying to look white" image
But at least she protects her natural hair

I think Beyonce just thinks she IS white

    http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x382/Conveys101/6f098814.jpg

    • ANSWER:
If it's supper dry, try a hydrating shampoo for example ISO Moisture Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner.
Shine in hair is a must so use a silicone serum such as Paul Mitchell Super Skinny.
If you use a straightner, make sure to you a thermal protection spray so it prevents those dead and dry ends.
Also doing a deep conditioner once a week to every two weeks will also help with your problem of dry hair.

  34. QUESTION:
How to get healthy long hair? ?
My hair grows fast, but once it gets at a certain length it just gets really shapeless and breaks. I really like Lindsay Lohan's long hair, and I know she has professionals to take care of it for her, but does anyone have any tips on how to get long hair and have it still look healthy?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Getting it trimmed on a regular basis is the best thing for any body's hair but especially long hair. To keep long hair healthy looking rinse your hair with cold water. It helps to close the pores of the hair to keep if from breakage. Also, avoid over brushing which will lead to damage. the same goes for blow drying. Let it air dry first and on low heat finish drying then blast with cold air to close the pores up. Do a deep condition ( i use aussie 3 minute miracle) a couple times a week. After you put the conditioner in your hair, put on a shower cap and let set for more than 3 minutes. Place a warm towel around your head to let it penetrate the strands. Stay hydrated!!!

  35. QUESTION:
How many women are growing their hair long and healthy?
I would love to have long hair and i'm feeling so impatient for it to become that way. If you have long hair please share how you have looked after it to get it that length and do you have any secrets on making it healthy? ;)

    • ANSWER:
It's taken me forever to get my hair the way it is.. every time I went to a salon they'd just chop it off even though I asked for a trim so I just keep up on it myself because it's really easy, just long and layered. To keep it healthy you should use heat on it as little as possible (hairdryers, straighteners, etc.) and when you do use a serum to protect your hair. Be really gentle when towel drying it and brushing it, especially when it's wet as that can cause breakage. I have mine natural color, but if you dye it try not to do it frequently and only touch up the roots. Also, people say to get hair cut every 6 weeks but hair only grows 1/2 inch per month so if you do it that often it won't really grow out, that's more of a rule if you already have the style and length you want. there's no secret formula to making it grow healthily and fast but just take care of it and it'll happen. If your hairs really damaged you can try conditioning masks once in a while.

  37. QUESTION:
How do i grow super long healthy hair?
okay so i want to get my hair down to the small of my back( im willing to take the several years it will take) but ive be growing it for about 9 months its down to my shoulder blades but before i grew it i dyed it several times and it has responded very badly now despite the fact that i take unbelievably good care of my hair including the occasional trim and regular treatments it is still falling apart. Any advice and will i need to get regular trims till all the dyed hair is gone and the start to add to my length?

    • ANSWER:
Okay first off, NO MORE HAIR DYE FOR YOU. As much as we would like to dye our hair and change the color when ever we want......we just can't. Our hair can only take so much! Your hair may be damaged because of it. There could be several factors that would make your hair fall out/break off. Using to much heat can cause damage, not enough moisture (especially with color treated hair), too much protein (causes the hair to be stiff and hard), or too much moisture ( which I don't think is the case).

The hair that isn't color treated is healthier because he can retain a lot of moisture as apposed to the color treated hair, which basically means you will probably be better off trimming off the color treated hair.

  38. QUESTION:
How to grow long, healthy, shiny hair?
I have about shoulder length hair and i just recently got a trim 1 week ago. But I want long, healthy and shiny hair by the summer. Which is in about 3 months. what can i do to get long, heathy hair by then?

    • ANSWER:
don't wash it every day(washing it every day especially when it is long drys it out), drink alot of water...and spend some time in the sun on an almost daily basis(hair grows faster in the summer partly because of the fact most people spend more time outside in the sun in the summer)

  39. QUESTION:
advice from anyone with long, healthy hair?
I have hair down to my chest right now but i want to grow it down to my waist, for those of you who have long hair, what shampoos/ conditioners do you use? how do i prevent split ends? and how long can i go without getting a trim? do you have a name of a specific vitamin to take for healthier hair? id appreciate any advice!

    • ANSWER:
Yeah! I had hair 3/4 of the way down my butt. I got it trimmed and now its a little above my tail bone. If you want to grow your hair, you need to make sure that you don't live in a lifestyle where you would not have enough time to take care of it properly. To me, shampoos and conditioners don't really matter, though I am very fond of Garnier. Split ends can be caused by not conditioning hair well enough. I only wash my hair twice a week or so and I use lots of conditioners. If you want to, just let it sit for a while and then wash it out. You should get your hair trimmed every 6 months or so--depending on the health of your hair. If your hair looks fine, then you can wait until you think you need one. There are no specific vitamins I know, but I do have some tips:
~Break a few eggs and mix ONLY THE WHITES in a bowl. (If you mix in the yolks as well, your hair will stink.) Put the egg whites all around your hair: at the roots, scalp, everywhere. Let it sit for a while (you can tie it into a bun) and wait until the egg white has hardened to the touch. Then wash it out. It makes your hair shine and brightens your color!
~You can also rinse your hair with nonalcoholic beer. It is said to help make your hair shine.
~Don't use a brush on wet hair--it causes breakage and split ends. Always use a wide-toothed comb.
Remember, this is YOUR HAIR. Don't do anything with it that you don't want to do. Treat it carefully, and stay away from maniacs with scissors! :-)

  43. QUESTION:
How to grow out long, healthy hair?
I just recently decided that I'm really sick of my hair, and I'd really love to have long (probably waist-length) hair.

The last time I actually went to the salon was probably about a year ago, but I do trim about 1/2 inch every month to get rid of split ends. My question is, how much should I be trimming every month to keep my hair looking healthy, but still letting it grow out? Also, I have the "Asian mullet" hair ( http://img318.imageshack.us/img318/9192/0eh1yk3vn5.jpg ) and as it grows, it's starting to look really shaggy and weird. How do I get rid of it without completely chopping off the longer hair at the bottom?

Just for reference, I'm going for a lightly-layered look like Miley Cyrus has. ( http://www.hairstyleswebsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/miley-cyrus-hair.jpg ) What should I ask my hair dresser for when I go in?

Are there any precautions I should take as far as styling my hair? I know I should avoid heat, but do I have to stop using it altogether? What products can I use to make my hair healthier?

    Thanks so much!

  44. QUESTION:
How to Grow Long, Healthy Hair?
My Hair is a little longer then shoulder length, and for the past year i have been so fidgety that every time it got long enough, I'd cut it again. Well, i regret cutting off my long hair because its the only thing i want in the world now, and I am willing to do anything within reason to get it back. So, for medium damage to my hair, how much should I trim off at the bottom and and how fast does hair grow for someone who exercises every day and get plenty of healthy nutrients grow? Any tricks, tips and secrets you want to share would be fabulous. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
I trim my hair every 3-4 months. True trimming your hair is healthy, but it won't make your hair grow fast. Your hair doesn't know it has been cut, therefore isn't going to grow as fast as you want it. tips i use is reduce heat on hair. If you straighten hair do it 2 times a week, use a deep conditioner once a week, and rinse you hair in cold water to stop hair from frizz and cold water will make hair shiny. Try to get as much protein in your diet as you can. Eggs, chicken, steak, etc. Drink plenty of water, and get plenty of sleep. GL!

  45. QUESTION:
How can i get healthy long hair again?
Okay so my hair is pretty bad, and i mean bad. Ive been dying it blonde for about 3 or 4 years and i recently decided to go back natural so i could just stop dying it all together. However, i also straighten my hair everyday because i have literally been curses with the wildest, thickest, and crazy hair ever. Its very curly around my face and then poofy elsewhere. Its a little past my shoulders with layers. I try to not straighten as much but it looks pretty ridiculous and i really hate it curly. Also even when i do wear it curly i have to wash it everyday and use hair spray and curl products which i know is bad for the hair as well. My breakage is pretty bad around my face and the sides by my ears mostly. I went back natural color and got a trim because i am aiming toward healthier hair but realistically am not going to stop straightening it. The only thing good about my hair is that it never gets greasy so i can go up to about 2-3 days without washing. So i am wondering what "miracle products" anybody suggests. I have deep conditioners, serums, heat protectors, everything but i need something that REALLY works..without costing me soo much (im a college student.) I need some tips pleeeease, i just want to have long healthy hair like i used to and wish it would just grow already! Thanks!

First of all, hello Yahoo! Answers Community. :)
I have a few questions today:

My hair is chemically straightened, so I want my hair to be very healthy. The last time I got my relaxer was August 2010, so my natural hair is coming back. This causes me to straighten my hair.

    SO HERE ARE THE ?s:

-Best heat protection sprays/products? Are there any that are under ?
-Also, are there any leave-in conditioners that are just AMAZING?
-I have a lot of split-ends, what products would help?
-Tips on how to get healthy, long hair? Preferably past my elbows. :p

Please leave a link or the name of the brand. :)

If you have an answer to one, multiple, or maybe even all, please help and thank you for your time! :3

    • ANSWER:
      1. Heat protectant doesn't protect hair 100%. Like sunscreen, you still get sunburned. Not only will your hair get damaged, relaxers also can give you cancer.

Relaxers Warning: but they're not permanent. It is a billion dollar business, and they do not give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss due to 'abuse', in this case, cancer.
Google Permanently straightening hair warning, about 7,410,000 results (0.08 seconds) , more warnings during the last month. I've been posting about them since 2009. Canada had issued a public health warning regarding Brazilian Blowout and has stopped the distribution of their salon product; Ireland has also issued a recall. ~ Also published in Vogue Feb. 2011.

      2. Leave-in conditioners does very little benefits for the hair.

      3. Spend 5-10 mins. on a sunny day so you can spot your split ends easier, using a 2" scissors, cut strand by strand, section by section, allowing new growth to take over, then 2x a year get a good hair cut.

Eliminating the 'causes' will make your hair healthier, stronger, longer, and 0 richer each time you 'save your hair'.

Your hair is envy from us stick straight haired girls! If you know how to care for your hair type, you won't have this problem. Melina Kanakaredes is an example who has hair like yours and she's got beautiful wavy hair.

Shampoo. Condition. Towel dry, scrunch with gel like Samy, blow-dry using a diffuser briefly, tousle the hair, finger comb, shake your head & you're good to go. If you don't have a diffuser, use a blow heat dryer on low for 5 mins.
When you wake up, instead of shampooing again, keep a bottled water filled with water/conditioner and spray on your hair. Scrunch, finger comb and you're good to go!

One method to make it look fuller, add body, tame the curls, bouncier, thicker, SEXIER, softer & shinier hair is to set your hair with plastic curlers (not Velcro) after you towel dry, you'll end up with uniform balance of curls. Blow dry briefly while curling them in curlers. Take them out, and finger comb to style. Used by the best hair color models, and the fashion industry, like Victoria Secret Fashion Show Dec. 2009, America's Next Top Models, EXPRESS, Dancing with the Stars, even used on Oprah's hair . . . . and continued to be used today where salons care about pampering your hair. When you see hair on TV a hair color commercial, they're not done by curling or straightening tools. Hair that shines like that and feels like hair, not hay, has to be done by the best hair tools available w/out damaging to the hair. When you take the curlers out, finger comb to style or lightly brush. Tousle the hair up. or shake your hair. You can use large, medium or small curlers, that depends on the length of your hair.
There's a reason why JLo was voted the most Sexiest Woman, by People magazine, she's got long beautiful hair!

If you've straightened your hair in the past, it may grow slowly or none at all.

What are some tips on how I can grow my hair REALLY long & healthy to prevent damage/split ends?
I mean, how can your hair grow LONG & healthy if they say the only way to reduce damage/split ends is to trim it every 6 WEEKS? Wouldn't that mean your hair will never grow really long? & who LITERALLY trims their ends EVERY 6 weeks-when it comes to females growing or TRYING to grow long hair? 1 advantage I have is that I don't use relaxers, so my hair is 100% natural. My hair is a little past my shoulders now, but I'm trying to get it to be waist length. I see plenty of beautiful Black women with long, healthy hair & keep it UP nicely.

    • ANSWER:
Ok...first, to stop so many split ends...when you shampoo and condition your hair...condition from the ends up to the scalp. Reason being is...your scalp produce moisture and sweat all ready...when it does none of that moisture really get to the ends...so balance it out. Your ends need that moisture...that how split end occur...think of the desert, it's all cracked and dry because of lack of rain and moisture. And yes your right there are some women who don't keep up w/ there trimming ends every 6 weeks. But this is why I recommend investing in a regular stylist that you can trust with not only the beauty of your hair but also the health. They will keep up with your trims. And the reason you see some of us black women with long beautiful hair is because we do consistently keep up with our trims...this is how we were raise. And before taking any hair vitamins...do your research. Good Luck!!!

  48. QUESTION:
How can i get my hair healthy and long?
I want to get my hair long and healthy is there anything i can use pills, vitamins, foods, shampoos, anything!

    • ANSWER:
Just let your hair grow at its own pace. There are no such things that make your hair grow faster.

Now, how to get it healthy..

How long does it take your hair to get oily? Wash it everytime it gets oily. Wash twice with shampoo then twice with conditioner. Why? Because, if you only wash it once, it leaves dirt and oils. You don't want to constantly wash your hair. Your hair needs some of the oils.

Try to not use heat or chemicals on your hair.

  49. QUESTION:
How do I get healthy long hair?!?
I recently got a haircut, and the layers are too short and so is the length.
Also a good bit of my ends are split from being processed and such.

What home items can I use to help it grow faster and healthier?

Please help, it will be greatly appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
Well hair grow half an inch each month on its own. But what I would suggest it try using Mane N' Tail Horse Shampoo and Conditioner. I use it all the timeand it does aid in growing your hair faster. I'd
say massage it into your scalp so it can get to your roots well this increases the blood flow helping
it grow faster. When shampooing and conditioning you should use cold or luke warm water on your hair so it won't damage it. Even hot water hurts your hair. You can find it at walmart in the pet section.
You should drink plenty of water to help condition your hair.

Eating Coconut oil also has benifits its not only good for adding nutrients to the hair, but its also
good for weight loss and has many more benifits.
And don't forget about exercising, as much as I hate it, it actually helps by increasing the blood flow
and stimulating the hair to grow faster.

      Hope I helped!

  50. QUESTION:
How do I keep extra long hair lookin healthy and stylish?
I'm five feet six and..get this...my hair is five feet 2 inches long. I don't want to cut it because its what makes me distinct from other people. How do I ensure thow that it remains healthy and that I'm stylish hairwise?

    • ANSWER:
I think the best thing you could do for it to remain healthy is to trim it now and then. Conditioning the ends is also important. For styles, I would try braids, or ponytails where you use your hair to tie a loose knot to shorten the length. I would check out www.longhaircommunity.com for more ideas and information.

I am a hobbyist photographer and have done a photoshoot with someone with your length of hair before. It is truly amazing. Glad you don't want to cut it!! Message me if you might be interested in modelling. :)

Heroes And Healthy Families

We all need heroes. Images of real or imagined people that make us believe anything is possible, who fill our life with hope and make us dream about a world full of possibilities. Think back at your childhood and the heroes in your life. We still believed in superpowers, invincibility, and the good vs. evil, bravery and courage. Who are your children's heroes?

I ask children to name their heroes and they go blank. I am surprised that I often get aI don't knowa. I often try to come up with a reasonable explanation for this. Here are my thoughts. Some heroes come from what we see on TV. Nowadays children are being exposed to more reality TV than ever before; for the little ones there are less heroes in the cartoons; for the older ones we have the super races around the world, the teens sharing a home, not to mention the bachelor and other reality TV shows. Can they find heroes here?

We are also more focused on material rewards and gains. We admire the athlete that makes millions of dollars per contract and endorsements; the model that gets paid millions for selling underwear; the movie stars that party around the clock; the popular kid that gets the brand new car and the girls. We do not focus on the police officers, the teachers, the fire-fighters, the doctors and nurses that save lives and shape our future. Why? Unfortunately, there is no money in those professions compared to the athletes, the movie stars and the rappers.

Finally, we spend less time with our children; we don't have a chance to show them the things that are important to us; how we spend our time and the effort we put forth on working. Become your children's heroes. Be a positive role model for altruism, volunteer work, and help those in need. Create a social conscience in your child and the world will be better. Talk to your children about the heroes out there, the philanthropists that donate money to combat hunger; the minority group member who became a political leader; the woman who has become a self made achiever and the hero next door who is always available to lend a hand.

Heart Healthy Snacks

Almonds and Cholesterol: Are Almonds Really a Heart-Healthy Snack?

It seems that many people are experiencing confusion over almonds and if they should or shouldn't be included as part of a heart healthy diet. On one hand, almonds are reported to lower bad LDL cholesterol. On the other hand, almonds are a calorie-dense food that's also high in fat.

Numerous studies, including one by the British Journal of Medicine, has shown convincing evidence that regular almond consumption helps lower bad LDL cholesterol. And not just any LDL, but it's been shown to reduce the small dense LDL particles that do the most damage to your arterial walls and puts you at a much higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

So what about the question of almonds being high in fat? Over 60% of the fat content in almonds is monounsaturated fats. (This is the same type of fat that is found in olive oil.) Monounsaturated fat is widely accepted to be a key ingredient to reducing the risk of heart disease and part of a heart-healthy diet.

But the health benefits of almonds doesn't stop with having healthy natural fat and it's ability to lower low-density lipoproteins. Almonds pack an antioxidant punch with it's high levels of Vitamin E. And with over 60 mg of magnesium in a quarter-cup of almonds, that's just more good news for your heart. You see, magnesium has been shown to help improve blood flow and make things 'easy' on your veins and arteries. (Translation: Less stress and work for your heart.)

Concerned about adding too many calories if you start eating almonds? Truth is, almonds have been shown to be beneficial at helping aid weight loss. But if you are just a little too 'scared' to add more calories, do this...

Substitute almonds for other foods vs. adding almonds to your existing diet. In fact, it's been estimated by some researchers based on date from a Nurses Health Study that replacing carbohydrates with healthy nuts like almonds may low the risk of heart disease by as much as 30%. The risk may be lowered as much as 45% if you substitute nuts with saturated fats like those founds in meat and dairy.

Looking for some ways to add almonds to your diet? Try these...

- Add almonds to your salad instead of meat or croutons
- Add to your morning cereals (hot or cold)
- Add to yogurt for a tasty crunch
- Add sliced almonds to vegetable dish (great with green beans)
- Eat with a sandwich as a crunchy substitute for chips
- Two words: Almond butter!

And not surprising, eating almond as a "whole food" is optimal for maximum health benefits. The antioxidant punch mentioned previously is more than doubled when the skins are combined with the meat of the almond, compared to either one separately.

    • ANSWER:
Add fruits & vegetables in your diet so you get natural vitamins & fibers. Apples, oranges, & bananas. Blueberries are a good "brain food" and pack a lot of antioxidants. Think about preparing your own salads with vegetables like tomatoes & shredded carrots (baby carrots themselves make for a healthy snack). Use romaine lettuce or spinach (spinach has more nutrients in it). Avoid dressings with a lot of fat; use a little bit of olive oil instead (which has healthy fats). Drink water. Sports drinks & some juices are good sweet, flavorful drinks that aren't that bad for you (just don't drink excessively). Nuts of any kind are an excellent source of protein & essential minerals.

Hmm...Seems very low caloried. I managed to lose 14 kg on a much higher caloried diet.

First: breakfast is ok, why don't you add a cup of low fat milk. It will help in your weight loss. Another at night.

Snack: The cheerios and reduced fat biscuits will impede your efforts. It smacks of sugar and sinple carbos. Change it to nuts, unsalted.

Lunch: Sounds good. better if you can change it to multi grain bread and add more veggies. Lettuce contains very little fibre and mainly water.

Snack: K bar...? If it is simple carbo, skip this, Change to cheese.

    • ANSWER:
Please, please, please research this subject. Don't trust me, but open your mind to the possibility that someone (me or American Heart Association) is lying to you about dietary recommendations. I am all against man made chemically altered trans fats (hydrogenated oils) but naturally occurring fats are regenerative & vital to health. The body can't make vitamins & minerals bioavailable to the body without fats to incorporate them into the body structure.

Both Dr.Atkins (creator of Atkins Diet) & Dr.Agatston (creator of South Beach Diet) were both cardiologists. Neither created the diets for weight loss, both created diets for optimal health (normalizing weight is just a by product of optimal health)

I believe plaque build up in the arteries are more attributable to carb consumption than dietary fats, which seems to be the conclusion of the following study. Carb consumption raises triglycerides & VLDL (bad cholesterol). Fats raise the HDL (good cholesterol). High triglyceride levels & low HDL levels are an indicator of plaque, glycation - the precursors to a heart attack and heart disease.

      http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/after-eating-effects-carbohydrates-vs.html

study from the Oxford group examining the postprandial (after-eating) effects of a low-fat vs. low-carbohydrate diet. (Roberts R et al, 2008

Postprandial lipoproteins, you'd think, would be plentiful after ingesting a large quantity of fat, since fat must be absorbed via chylomicrons into the bloodstream. But it's carbohydrates that figure most prominently in determining the pattern and magnitude of postprandial triglycerides and lipoproteins. Much of this effect develops by way of de novo lipogenesis, the generation of new lipoproteins like VLDL after carbohydrate ingestion.

I eat and advocate a high fat diet (more commonly called a low carb diet). My dietary fat levels run 70-80% of my calories and mostly from saturated fats (coconut oil, butter, fats in meats). I use a large amount of mayonnaise but am dismayed of the oils used in it (but I am disabled and use it for convenience anyway)

There seems to be confusion about saturated fats (and naturally occurring trans fats) falling into the same realm as man made chemically altered fats (trans fats from hydrogenated fats) which they usually alter saturated fats because they are stable and don't become rancid the way unsaturated (vegetable oils) oils can.

There is a need to balance your Omega 6 oils equally with Omega 3 and with a diet that is so high in fat. I feel more comfortable with saturated fats. They are stable and don't go rancid, they aren't oxidized outside my body, I feel more comfortable with them not oxidizing inside my body.

Saturated fats may not be considered as yet an essential fat required for life but natural breast milk is 50% of it's calories from fat & half of it is saturated fat (half saturated & half oleic acid) for infants (the fats in coconut oil & olive oil - surely nature can't be too wrong). Coconut oil (the only oil close to duplicating breast milk and added to baby formula) has an extremely unique make up with it's medium chained fatty acids and can be processed directly as energy in the liver in much the same manner as a carbohydrate.

We all feel comfortable recommending olive oil (with it's unusual oleic omega 9 makeup - the same as in breast milk) but canola oil has the same monounsaturated type oil and there are serious concerns about using this genetically modified oil as a food source. (cattle won't eat it and I trust their instincts better than marketers) We all feel comfortable recommending fish oil but there is dispute with the same omega 3 make up in flax seed oils.

The link between saturated fats and heart health is based on faulty science but very few are willing to contradict the long standing edict. Both cholesterol and saturated fat are essential for growth in babies and children, especially the development of the brain. Still, the American Heart Association recommends a low-cholesterol, lowfat diet for children & adults.

50% of dietary fats need to be from saturated fats for calcium to be effective in the bone structure. Saturated fats enhance the immune system & are important for good health.

Also things that are reasonably cheap, tasty for a little kid and easy to make. Please, need your help, she seriously needs to eat a little better. Thanx in advance!!!

  22. QUESTION:
Artichokes: Healthy snack or not really that great?
I'm trying to eat a little healthier and recently rediscovered how much I like artichokes. I used canned artichoke hearts dipped in a little vinegar (for that extra zing). What do you think, is this a good, healthy snack? I couldn't find much nutrition info on canned artichokes.

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Artichokes are fine and dandy! Great that your trying to be healthier. Just be careful about the part of the artichoke you eat. I hear that the part you can't eat is very bad. Don't even worry about artichokes being not healthy, it's not man made... that's the big thing. Here is a book that changed my life.. hope it does the same for you if your willing to read it. 23. QUESTION:
Heart Healthy and Diabetic Cookbook en Español?
My dad was recently diagnosed with high cholesterol, high blood pressure and borderline diabetes and my family is struggling to provide him with a tasty diet.

My family ALWAYS eats meat! Now that he can't my mom is seriously confused on what to feed my dad, she thought adding veggies to his old diet would help...WRONG!

After a week of turkey burgers she thought it be okay if he ate some meat so she fed him some fajitas...pretty much she fed him what he USED TO eat and the next day his hand was swollen! (My dad LOVES salt!)

We freaked out and now he's back on turkey, chicken and fish but my mom isn't a very versatile cook so it all tastes bland and my I see my dad looking in the cabinets after every meal looking for a tasty snack...I need to find a cookbook that covers all of his health issues in Spanish because my mom doesn't read in English.

I want a recipe book! Some of the English books I saw were mostly info and a few recipes...and I don't want my mom to feel intimidated (she was freaking out after she saw all the restrictions on my dad's diet).

I appreciate any help provided, I tried searching in Spanish but my Spanish isn't all that great and I ended getting confused...

    Thanks for your help!

I'm tryin 2 watch my heart;whats the maximum amount of SODIUM i can have in snacks? in mg's & daily % value?
on these sunflower kernels im eating right now,On the bag it says:220 mg 9%of daily values
is that a healthy amount? or an unhealthy amount?

    • ANSWER:
Your total daily intake of sodium should not exceed 2500 mg.
If you do the math, 10% of daily values would be 250 mg, wouldn't it?
When it comes to nutritional values, the RDA (rec. daily allowance) is just the bare minimum for survival eg. 250 mg. for vitamin C. This amount would just keep you from getting scurvy. Optimal amounts are what you need for good health -- in this case 3,000 mg a day. Big difference, isn't it?

  25. QUESTION:
Could fruit roll ups be making me hungrier? + Need healthier snacks?
My mom has been buying fruit roll ups because they're only fifty calories. I like that, BUT I don't think they're good for me at all. I think the sugar in it is making me crave other foods. Like, even when I'm not particularly hungry, I'll grab chips. Even though I have relatively healthy chips (both sun chips and fat free potato chips), I don't like this new habit. Do you think if I got rid of the fruit roll ups, it will kick these weird and random cravings? I've been trying to drink a bunch of water, so I won't think about food, but yeah. My mom isn't very nutritionally sound, so if she sees a snack is fifty calories, she'll automatically think it's healthy. : I know I have the willpower to not eat the fruit rolls ups, but there is not much variety for me. She has all these gross and unappetizing 100 calories snacks. They don't look very healthy either. Ugh. Even though I eat healthy meals (with lots of fruits, veggies, oats, etc...), I wish I could find some healthier snacks out there. I would prefer if those snacks weren't just fruit, because I'm vegetarian, and most of my meals on a daily basis contain quite enough fruit.

By the way, this doesn't have to do with my weight. I'm at a perfectly healthy weight for my height and age. I would just like to cut out any bad things from my diet. I'd also love to help my mother out. She's quite a bit overweight. Since she's in her 50s now, she's probably at a higher risk of getting heart disease, so I want to do what I can to help. I'm trying to introduce her to healthier foods in a settle manner.

    Advice?

P.S. - I haven't been tested for a peanut allergy, but I know I don't take peanuts well. Whenever I eat them, I start coughing and my throat blocks up. So, I don't really want to eat peanuts every day, even though it may be beneficial to me.

  26. QUESTION:
    how can i eat healthy?
    im 14 years old and
i have heart problems and i pained 3 pounds in a week.
and for lunch, i only eat snacks.

can anyone give me lists of food i can eat at school for lunch? for a healthy heart?

    • ANSWER:
Hi, here are some suggestions for some healthier school lunches:
1)Pack a little container of salad dressing and eat with raw veggies such as carrot and celery sticks, broccoli and cauliflower pieces, etc.
2)Instead of a cookie or other sweet item, pack a mixture of dried fruit, nuts, and coconut.
3)Add a few cubes of cheese or even string cheese for extra calcium.
4)Pack apples and pears that have been cored and sectioned to make eating easier.
5)Make extra salad at dinner and pack a small portion to eat with half a sandwich.
6)Take a small container of 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter to smear on an apple or pear.
7)Take a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese and eat with veggies or whole-wheat crackers.
8)Make a sandwich with whole wheat tortilla instead of bread. Fill it with veggies and some lean turkey.
      9)Hot soup in a thermos.
      10)Hard-boiled eggs
11)Yogurt with a little fruit and some granola or Kashi on top.

In addition, these healthier snacks may come in handy:
1)Fiber One bars (delicious, especially the chocolate and oats)
2)Kashi TLC Trailmix bars (my personal favorites)
3)Gnu Bars (have 12 grams of fiber in each one!)
4)handful of almonds or walnuts or pistachio nuts (already shelled, of course)
5)an apple cored and quartered and a little bit of peanut butter in a plastic container to dip it in.
6)grapes, or a box of raisins
7)string cheese or a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese, or an ounce of a hard cheese
      8)low-fat popcorn in a baggie
9)baby carrots and a little hummus (in a plastic container)
      10) a couple of those "Ones Prunes". They're delicious!
      11)dried fruit
      12)whole-grain pretzels
13)whole-grain crackers w/ peanut butter or cheese
14)some cream cheese smeared on luncheon meat and then rolled up like a cigar
      15)a piece of dark chocolate

Here are my favorite healthy breakfast ideas:
      1) oatmeal and fruit, skim milk
      2) eggs (have you seen the recent research that says people who eat 2 eggs each morning lose more weight than those who don't?) In a hurry, try hard-boiled eggs.
      3) whole-grained cereal, skim milk, fruit
      4) yogurt and fruit
5)smoothie made in a blender with ice, skim milk, plain yogurt, banana, frozen berries
      http://www.easy-weightloss-tips.com/weight-loss-shake-recipes.html
      6) whole-grain toast with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter or soy butter
      7) whole-grain bagel with egg and a slice of 2% cheese
      8) protein bar a a glass of skim milk for the days when you're on the run

And finally, this is the way that we should all eat most of the time for good health:
      lean protein--
beef, turkey, chicken, fish, pork, eggs...any of that will work but buy lean cuts. Limit hamburger to once a week and buy the 90% fat free. It's just as good, I promise.

      veggies--
of all kinds without butter or sauces but a tiny bit of olive oil would be okay

      fruits--
      of all kinds

      whole-grains--
whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice instead of white, potatoes are fine (without butter) but sweet potatoes are healthier

      low-fat dairy--
skim milk (at least for the adults), low-fat or fat-free yogurt, 2% cheese

      heart-healthy oils--
olive oil, canola oil, avocados, olives
      Hope this info. helps...good luck!

    • ANSWER:
      hey banana

As always I prefer to mention, that the implementation of any diet, may either result in exacerbating an already problematic set of EATING HABIT , and perhaps even have the opposite effect that you desire. Just because something gets promoted by a large corporation, or is published in a magazine, does not make it effective or healthy. If you are not careful, you will not succeed in anything but making yourself less healthy, so ensure that you consult your physician and or nutritionist before you start in a diet. Remember, you can eat everything you already eat, you just need to cut that amount down to a reasonable caloric basis, and add exercise to your daily routine, if you take their steps your health will reflect it.

    Something wrong with my heart?
So one day I got home from my friends house and I went to bed, and all of a sudden my heart jumped and i felt shocked, then it started racing like crazy. I felt dizzy and weak. I had a lot of caffeine that day, and im not used to it, so i figured that was all it was, and drank some OJ. Then today, It happened again, but it came out of no where. I had a very good breakfast, lunch, healthy snacks, and plenty of fluids. After it happened I felt weak and dizzy again for about an hour.

    • ANSWER:
What you got is called Paroxysmal supraventricular (atrial) tachycardia(PSVT). Read on....

Paroxysmal supraventricular (atrial) tachycardia is a regular, fast (160 to 220 beats per minute) heart rate that begins and ends suddenly and originates in heart tissue other than that in the ventricles.

*Most people have uncomfortable palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, and chest pain.
*Episodes can often be stopped by maneuvers that stimulate the vagus nerve, which slows the heart rate.
*Sometimes, people are given drugs to stop the episode.

Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia is most common among young people and is more unpleasant than dangerous. It may occur during vigorous exercise.Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia may be triggered by a premature heartbeat that repeatedly activates the heart at a fast rate.

The fast heart rate tends to begin and end suddenly and may last from a few minutes to many hours. It is almost always experienced as an uncomfortable palpitation. It is often associated with other symptoms, such as weakness, light-headedness, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Usually, the heart is otherwise normal. The doctor confirms the diagnosis by doing an electrocardiogram (ECG).

This may be induced by premature atrial or ventricular ectopic beats. Other triggers include digitalis toxicity, hyperthyroidism and stimulants, including caffeine, drugs, and alcohol.

If it is recurrent, get checked up by a cardio.

    • ANSWER:
Not enough calories, absolutely no protein, and it's all processed garbage. This is a terrible diet; it's unhealthy in several ways. You're starving yourself, depriving your body of essential nutrients, and what you are putting into your body isn't real food.

Vitamin water is glorified sugar water. It is worthless and it has no place in your diet.

EDIT: Don't be a smartass. A couple of kidney beans isn't enough protein for a growing girl. You'd have to consume four cups of nothing but kidney beans in order to get enough protein. You're not smarter than me; don't pretend you are.

  35. QUESTION:
How'd I do for a normal person eating, trying to get healthy?
Okay, so in blunt text, I've tried losing weight(minimum calories) and I always gain it back. I concentrated on food, not what was in it. Right now I'm in peace that I'll never lose weight(I've maintained the same weight for two years now. That's pretty good considering I'm 13 and have been growing up) and now I just want to be healthy and minimize my chances of diabetes, high cholestrol/blood pressure, heart attack, ect. before I get too old, and I want to start NOW.

    I'm 5'7"
    Weight=148-154lbs ranging day to day

Breakfast has always been a challange for me so I only had two cups light cranberry juice and like 6 grapes(seedless, red[purple?] and green)

Lunch-a veggie snack pack(they're so cute! Grape tomatoes, brocolli cut up into little pieces, and baby carrots with light ranch in a little container like a party thing minimized!) a mandarin orange fruit thingy(like this one on the top left: http://images.meredith.com/fitness/images/2008/04/ss_101190882.jpg) and a baby cutcumber(I skinned it)

Softball game that I didn't play, but I had about an hour of practice before :D (I"m bottome food chain. 8th grader among high schoolers lol) Ate maybe a handful and a half of ranch dressing DAVID seeds

Dinner- Coke Zero and about 2 cups of low sodium heart healthy minestrone(I'm a vegetarian and altogether that's a good 10g of protein!! :D )

I might have a peice of wheat bread with butter latter, but it's about seven so I think I won't.

GOod bad? What? It's not gonna be like this everyday, mind you, but I want ot know if I'm on the right track to healthy-ness. Next time I'm going to have raw, non-packaged mandarine oranges, but I was short on time so I kinda just threw it in there when I grapped the snack pack.

What my mom should eat to stay healthy?
I do most of the cooking and I want to know what I should be making for my mom. Shes a heavy smoker and wont ever quit no matter what I do so anything that reduces the risk of cancer is good. She cant eat some stuff-bell peppers, lettuce, and some other salad-type stuff because she has a hiatal hernia and it makes her sick. But she does like stuff like broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, peas, asparagus, etc. She wont eat fish, but a recipe I could disguise it in would work lol. She really likes carbs like breads and pastas and she loves shrimp but we dont have the budget to buy the expensive stuff. She likes spicy stuff but most spicy things give her heartburn. Her eating habits are horrible- fast food sausage or bacon biscuits for breakfast, usually fast food for lunch, and usually huge bowls of chocolate ice cream and snack cakes before bed. Shes still skinny from genes though, so fat content doesn't matter since shes 5'11 and I'm 6' and we both stay a size 0 no matter what we eat. Heart disease does run in the family though, so heart-healthy stuff is good. oh and her boyfriend (lives with us) is a type-1 diabetic so he should be able to eat it too. I'm only 17 so I dont know much about nutrician.Thanx!

I dont get much exercises apart from walking to school. But yet people say i am almost anorexic, i am very thin. When i masturbate my chest feels weird after, i cant explain it just weird. Does this mean i might have an heart attack?

    • ANSWER:
Too young to have a heart attack!
Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Studies have shown that bioflavonoids, the pigments that lend fruits and plants their color, may stimulate insulin production and inhibit glycation, the process in which damaged glucose molecules bind with proteins to create advanced glycation end products, or AGEs. While most AGEs are harmless, others disturb molecular functioning and contribute to organ and nerve damage. To better understand how this occurs, remember that glycation is what causes food in the oven to brown.

  38. QUESTION:
Will eating meals using recipes from the show Healthy Appetite with Ellie Krieger ONLY keep me healthy?
I've been trying some of Ellie Krieger's recipes and they all taste really good, but are all the recipes from her show really healthy for you? I'm not concerend about losing weight at all. I got sick a few years ago to the point I had to have surgery and have had digestive issues since, so I'm really concerned about what I eat now. I'm trying to make a lifetime meal plan (meaning breakfast, lunch, dinner & a snack) based on pure healthy recipes & since Ellie Krieger is a nutritionist, I would think her recipes would be some of the healthiest out there, so I'm planning on making my meals using ONLY her recipes. I've never been overweight so that's not my concern at all in choosing recipes, I just want recipes that are supposed to be really healthy for me & that will keep me from getting sick or getting any diseases such as heart disease, diabetes or cancer later on. I'm especially looking for recipes that will help with my digestive issues. Am I on the right track using her recipes?
I know exercise will help too, but the reason I wrote 'ONLY' in my question above, is that I meant that the only foods / meals I plan on eating for a while are meals prepared using Ellie Krieger's recipes. I don't mean that all I plan to do is eat healthy food to stay healthy, I also plan on still exercising and of course avoiding things that I know are bad for you like cigarettes, alcohol etc. Also, trying to keep my stress levels down becuz I've heard stress can cause you to become sick and stay sick. But like I mentioned before, I plan on eating only foods / meals that are made using Ellie's recipes as one of the steps to keep myself healthy. I'm trying to make sure I ONLY eat foods / meals that are good for me and will help me stay healthy.

    • ANSWER:
i would help but the only way to keep yourself healthy is good old fashioned hard work. watch what you eat, how much you eat, ( even if its healthy too much is too much!) and try to fit some exercise into your daily life.

  41. QUESTION:
Why is my heart rate so high at the gym?
I am an 18 year old female. I started going to the gym around 6 months ago, following an exercise regime around 2-3 times a week, more or less. I go on the treadmill, cross trainer, two different bikes, rower and stepper, which takes around 1 hour+. I can tell my fitness has improved over the 6 months, and the levels on each machine has increased and I've found myself being better able to cope with it as time goes on. The exercises challenge me but nothing too much, I feel after that I have done a good amount of exercise but not over done it. Even so, my heart rate is always so high, despite the feeling that I am much fitter than before. I watch my diet too, eat 3 healthy meals a day and snack little. My heart rate, though, can sometimes go as high as 180+ on any machine, and I know this is high. Why is this? Does it mean I am still very unfit? It hasn't seemed to have changed despite the fact I exercise regularly. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is the case?
A gym instructor told me it was high! So there must be an issue somewhere... :/

    • ANSWER:
I think you are just trying to be an average person when in fact no-one is an average person :P I do a similar workout to you, i am a 21 year old female and my heart rate gets to 170 - 180 when im on the treadmill, bikes, cross trainer and the rower, i don't do the stepper though. I feel good when my heart gets to this level as i know i am working it and making it much stronger in the long run!
As long as you don't feel faint/dizzy or weak while your heart rate is this high i would say you have nothing to worry about. However if you are really worried you can always just pay a visit to your doctor to chat about it!

  42. QUESTION:
How to help my hubby eat better?
My husband really wants to eat better, his father's recent heart attack has him wanting to be healthier, lower his cholesterol, and loose some weight. The problem- he is a super picky eater. He is willing to try new things, but he dislikes a lot of items, and things he really doesn't like, he just won't eat. He's a meat and potatoes guy- no veggies, and he only recently started eating a few fruits. I'm looking for simple, fabulous, and HEALTHY meal and snack ideas and a substitute for his sweet tooth.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,
your husband sounds a lot like me, except I'm more into savory foods, I'm still meat and potatoes - no veg.

I haven't been officially diagnosed but I have been having twinges which I suspect are from angina.

I take 5mg of aspirin per day to thin the blood and the occasional glass of red wine too.

I recently found the website below which I'm enjoying. I joined a group for people who want to eat healthily for disease prevention. You get lots of support and motivation from each other. The site is paid for by advertisers (weight loss products and the like) so its free to the end user, you do have to sign up and put up with a few emails, but these are interesting and informative, not mindless advertising drivel.

      Good luck and healthy regards,
      Brian

  44. QUESTION:
Do I have a heart problem?
I'm very young (16) so I think the probability is unlikely, but I want to know if I'm developing something.

The past year I slept an average of 2-3 hours a day due to schoolwork and poor time management.
The year before that I slept an average of 4-5 hours a day.

I don't exercise regularly. In fact, the last time I have exercised frequently was last October. However, my BMI is average. I eat reasonably healthy but snack on lots of junk food.

Sometimes after sitting for a long period of time, when I get up my heart region hurts very slightly. Also, sometimes it feels a bit heavy and I pause to take deep breaths. (I'm not sure if this is psychological.) I have noticed this change in the past year.

Also, I think one of my relatives died due to some sort of heart problem (not sure which type).

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
"Disturbed sleep can trouble the heart and a troubled heart can disturb sleep."

I agree with you that it's probably nothing serious, but you should go and see your doctor about this anyway as they'll be able to put your fears to rest.

In the meantime it wouldn't hurt to do a bit more cardio, try walking everywhere, and don't dawdle, get yourself out of breath. But don't push yourself harder than you feel comfortable with.

In short, try to get more sleep and do a little more exercise =) You know the sleep problem is more down to "time management" than schoolwork.... what do you have, a PS3 or an Xbox? =b

How can I talk to my mom and get her to listen? And how can I convience her that after I turn 17 I have a year left til im an adult and I should be able to make some decisions?
    Please and Thank you

    • ANSWER:
Well, I got a smack in the face, when I was told that I am a diabetic, after all of these years of not exercising and pushing the limit on junk food.

The best advice I can give you is hard, but avoid anything white. foods that have sugar, flour (white or brown), rice (white or brown), and potatoes.

There is a DUMMY Book out there called "The Glycemic Index Diet For Dummies" that is full of a wealth of information about eating low glycemic foods. If everyone would do this, then Diabetes would reduce drastically. Just following the healthy advice in this book and walking for 3- minutes to an hour each day, I lost 32 pounds in three months.

Walking is about as healthy an exercise that you can do. you don't have to be a power walker and it is something you can start with just ten minutes a day. Buy yourself a good pedometer, some good walking shoes and gradually build yourself up to 10,000 steps a day. That means you will eventually be walking about 5 miles. find a buddy who will walk with you and the time will fly! Wear your pedometer ALL of the time. All steps count, even those to the refrigerator.lol. You may be surprised, at the end of the day just how many (or how many you didn't) steps you walked.

Catch your mom when she isn't real busy and just tell her that you have some concerns . Ask her if she could just sit down with you over a glass of milk and calmly discuss these things. She may not warm up at first, but if you keep your cool and don't get bent out of shape, if you don't get what you want, she may still come around. But if you throw a temper fit, she is going to assume you still aren't grown up enough. If you can ask her for what you need and then ask her if you can revisit the conversation in a few weeks, that shows to her that you are growing up and that maybe you are ready to accept some responsibility.

It isn't easy for moms or dads to allow their children to grow up. But start acting more like an adult, help her around the house, surprise her with little things like throwing dinner on the table or cleaning up the dishes without being asked....Like is a give and take thing.

Good luck and I hope you get some more advice that you can glean from and help you with the decisions that you are making.

    • ANSWER:
You need more variety in your diet, for one thing.
You also need to eat more veggies. Try having less bread and panini and eat salads or soup for lunch.
Have a hi fiber cereal with low fat yoghurt or skim milk for breakfast.
Increase the amount that you exercise- walking ou dog for 40 mins is great, but if you're going to cycle you should spend more time. Up to an hour.
I don't know how much water you drink, but you should be drinking at least 2 liters a day. More if you're exercising and sweating.
Remember: a lot of vegetarian diets are high in fat. You tend to eat more nuts and cheese to compensate.
You should conisder joining a program like weight watchers- they will help you and incentivise you and motivate you to lose weight healthily.

  48. QUESTION:
I need help with unhealthy and healthy food?
It is not that I am fat or anything, its just that I eat really unhealthy foods. I know it will get worse as I get older. I am only 12 so a lot of stuff could happen when I am young, diabetes, heart problems, really anything could happen. My snacks are usually chips, pop tarts, brownies, ice cream, or cookies. I don't eat all of that at once, trust me! When my mom makes dinner I do want to eat it but, I ate so much of that junk I just can't! And when she does make a dinner that is healthy I try to eat it, I really do but I am too full of junk! I do want to stop eating like that but it tastes so good I just can't get away from it, y'know? I guess I should say I just need some sort of motivator or something to remind me to eat healthy. My parents have head lectures and talks with me about what I am eating, but I just can't do it! I need something to help me! Again, I am not fat, I am unhealthy. There is a difference

    • ANSWER:
Well, I have a daughter your age and she was on the same trend. What I started to do (and maybe your mom can help) is make sure healthy snacks are available first thing in the fridge or cupboard. You can easily cut up a bunch of veggies yourself (carrot sticks, cucumbers, sweet peppers) and have a container of a dip you like nearby. That way when you open the fridge the snack is handy and easy, right in front of you. There is nothing wrong with snacking, in fact its better for you to eat smaller amounts more often. The problem is that junk food is too easy and healthy food takes some planning. Whenever you have time, like on a saturday, just cut up some veggies and put in a tupperware container. You can also have berries handy, or other fruits, that you can dip into a yummy strawberry yogurt. Another great snack is humus - you can buy this. Dip pita bread into it and its a much healthier snack. You can also eat your favorite junk on occasion so you don't feel deprived - just keep less of it in the house and only eat less often. If you eat healthy 80 or 90% of the time - then you can have some unhealthy 10 or 20% of the time. I know thats easy to say, but it just takes some planning and wise grocery shopping. Go with your parents to shop and ask them for healthy things you like so your home is stocked ! Good luck !

  49. QUESTION:
Can anyone help me with diet for heart disease? :-) ?
My Fiancee is 22 and he has a heart condition, he has a stent in his left main artery. We both want to healthily lose a bit of weight and really focus on eating properly to look after our hearts, especially his. I am looking for some ideas of what would be healthy for him to eat for his heart, I like to experiment with cooking however I am not the best chef, so nothing too hard! :-) So any ideas would be really appreciated, for meals and light snacks, treats, etc, thank you in advance guys..
Thank you very much for the tips x

    • ANSWER:
Probably, the best thing to do is follow a diabetic cookbook with an eye toward cutting the sodium. I have included a link to a site that has recipes for Heart Failure patients. Their primary concern is sodium content, you'll have to look at fats on your own. I've never cooked anything there but I like to look at it and dream before I eat my mush.

  50. QUESTION:
Can you help me with a diet for heart disease? :-) ?

We both want to healthily lose a bit of weight and really focus on eating properly to look after our hearts, especially his. Hey thanks for that, his cholesterol is normal, however the reason he had to have the stent put in 2 years ago was because he has a blockage in his artery, so that’s what I mainly want to avoid happening again, so anything that would be good for reducing calcium or plaque in his heart. He is on medications to reduce it already but I want him to start eating good now, after he had another scare recently! Thanks again for your help
Well thank you very much for those ideas Zini, he stopped smoking 2 years ago but had the (very) occasional one with a drink, maybe once a month. I got so stressed about this that I threatened to end our relationship if he kept doing it. However I was in the wrong also because, although I never smoked around him (in our house or cars, only smoke outside) I am a smoker and I guess as long as his other half is smoking there is always going to be the temptation there. Well I am giving up in the new year. I am not going to try, I am going to do it. He means more to me then a smoke. We both drink very very little, maybe once a month, 8 or 9 drinks each at the most. The thing I worry about most, aside from his forgetfulness when it comes to taking his medication, is his diet. He never took it seriously until he had this 2nd scare, we both really want to do things right this time. I can afford to lose some weight myself and I think it will be fun if we do it together. Neither of us use salt,
since his heart attack 2 years ago. I never use it while cooking, use herbs for flavour instead. I think we are doing pretty good so far seeing as we are only 22.Thanks for all your tips x

    • ANSWER:
for heart dse. normally a low fat diet would be prescribed. try to use virgin olive oil when frying. and increase intake of fish and vegestables and oats.fish is high in omega3 which is a form of HDL. or good cholesterol. it decreases bad cholesterol which could block hearts blood vessel causing atherosclerosis and plaque blocking blood supply to the heart. but still try to consult a doctor maybe he could have some blood test to confirm blood cholesterol level.
