Healthy Eating Blogs

In the preceding blogs I've written about the goodness of a predominantly vegan diet, how you can make your diet 'colorful', how to create your own 'secret diet', why you need to walk the path of healthy eating, the path that leads to good health and happiness, motivation, cleared some misconceptions about diets, explained what body fat means in relation to your weight, have sought to clear some misconceptions about sugar free alternatives, have explained why fruit should not be made into a juice, have written a two-part blog on understanding our stomach, a blog on increasing your nutrition intake, one on the relation between the state of your mind and body fat, a blog on how to prepare yourself to enjoy food at a party and had begun a three part series on what to eat (when not at a party). I've also written on the importance of water in our diet, a blog on the myth about olive oil, importance of supplements in daily diet, a blog on relationship between crash diets and water and a three-part series on the Principles of eating right.

How you can combat bad breath

Bad breath has everything to do with the food you eat and is clearly a bigger dampener than a pot belly. When food is not getting digested properly it leads to bad breath. Lack of digestive enzymes and overeating are big culprits when it comes to making your mouth smell really bad.

You can combat bad breath by following the principles of healthy eating I've written about in the preceding three blogs. You should also ask yourself if you are drinking adequate quantities of water. Look up my blog on effects of dehydration - minor dehydration leads to bad breath and major dehydration leads to foul body odor. So when traveling always carry adequate quantities of drinking water. If you have not been eating fruits regularly, Vitamin C also helps combat bad breath. Also, visit the dentist at least once in six months - decaying tooth cavities not only cause bad breath, it also leads to swallowing improperly chewed food which in turn affects digestion especially of meat and other foods that need to be properly chewed before swallowing. After each meal, gargle and preferably brush your teeth.

Late evening work outs

A lot of my clients especially the men like to workout after they return home from work. But because they want to follow my principles of eating right, they eat light for dinner and eat nothing pre and post workout. Well, here's the deal: a pre workout and post workout meal is a necessity irrespective of the time of the day you workout at. So even if its 8:00 pm or 10:00 pm, make sure you have your high GI carbs and protein shake within 10 minutes of working out. Yup, even if the watch reads 11 p.m. you need that vital top-up.

Healthy Eating Advice

Healthy eating is difficult to achieve because we have so many health factors to consider and food choices to make. We know antioxidants are good for us so we want to eat lots of colorful fruits and vegetables because they contain phytochemicals like carotenoids and flavonoids which neutralize the free radicals that cause the age-related degenerative diseases. We know that we may not get all the antioxidants that we need in our food so we take supplements to ensure an adequate supply of antioxidants. But what about the actual food we eat. One of the major problems with our modern diet is that the food we eat is a tasty combination of 00004000 saturated fats and highly processed and quickly digested carbohydrates. However in the last several years, people have become so concerned about fats in their diet that they have substituted carbohydrates and avoided even the good unsaturated fats in lean meat, olive oil and other plant oils. Now everybody seems to be eating a medium- to high-carbohydrate diet without giving proper attention to the type of carbs that they eat.

Not all carbohydrates behave the same in our bodies. We have been told for years to avoid simple carbs like honey and white bread and eat complex carbohydrates that our body doesn't digest and turn to glucose as quickly. However determining whether a food containing carbohydrates is absorbed and raises our blood sugar quickly or slowly is not at all intuitive. Scientists have done a lot of rigorous testing over the past several years and have found that white bread and baked potatoes raise our blood sugar level much faster than honey, jams and chocolate bars. These scientists developed a numerical index called the Glycemic Index or GI to compare the ability of different carbohydrate containing foods to raise the body's blood sugar levels - or in other words the speed of conversion to glucose. GI values are determined by feeding human subjects who have fasted overnight a fixed amount of the food and then measuring their blood glucose levels at fixed intervals of time. Pure glucose is set at 100 and then other foods are compared to this profile. Testing is time consuming and the tests have to be averaged for a number of individuals. However these studies have yielded some surprising results such as the fact that the starches in rice, bread, potatoes and many types of cereals were absorbed and raised blood sugars very quickly but the sugars in fruit, candy, chocolate and ice cream did not result in prolonged rises in blood sugars. In other words many of the starchy foods had a much higher Glycemic Index than many of the sugary foods. Needless to say these results seem counter intuitive and have caused a lot of controversy in the food industry. The rate of absorption is very dependant on how the carbs are bound up with the food fiber and the particle size. For example less gelatinized products like al dente spaghetti and oatmeal have lower GI values and stone ground flours have lower GI values than finely ground flours. The fibrous coat surrounding beans and seeds stop enzymes from getting at the starchy carbs inside and will slow the digestion of grainy breads, legumes and barley. The acidity of foods also slows down digestion and vinegar, lemon juice, pickles and sourdough bread will result in lower GI meal values.

The Glycemic Index is important not only to diabetics but also to non-diabetics because we need to know what foods will keep our blood sugars on an even keel and not raise them too high and then have them plummet down again causing hunger. The slow digestion of low GI foods and the gradual rise and fall in blood-glucose response helps people with diabetes control their blood sugar levels and increase their sensitivity to insulin. Low GI foods will help healthy people delay hunger pangs and promote weight loss in overweight individuals. In addition low GI carbohydrates can reduce blood cholesterol levels and also reduce our risk of heart disease. High blood glucose spikes can result in oxidative stress leading to the formation of plaque that can cause atherosclerosis and even blood clots. So keeping our blood sugar levels fairly level and low seems like what we should be trying to achieve through healthy eating. How do we go about achieving this?

The first step is to look at what carbohydrates we are consuming and the GI levels of the meals that we are eating. Then we should try and ensure we have at least one low GI food in each meal to keep the overall meal GI close to 50. Most fats and proteins have no effect on the GI level of our meal because they don't contain carbs. However watch out for saturated fats and too many calories. Let's look at some meals and see what substitutions we could make. The GI values are shown in brackets.

Breakfast

Cut back on Corn Flakes (92), Rice Krispies (82) and substitute All-Bran (32) or switch to a cereal based on oats, barley or bran. Stop eating white bagels (72), white bread (70) or whole-wheat bread (77) and switch to pumpernickel (50) or sourdough (55). Fruits are mostly low GI foods and surprisingly orange juice (46) is very good.

Lunch and Dinner

Eat your colored vegetables and make your salad dressings with olive oil and vinegar. Avoid parsnips (97) and substitute pastas like al dente white spaghetti (38), linguini (46) or macaroni (47) for Instant white rice (87) and potatoes - baked (85), red-skin peeled and boiled (88). Except for parsnips and potatoes most vegetables have a low GI value.

Additional information on GI values can be found at the University of Sydney website http://www.glycemicindex.com/ or in the "The New Glucose Revolution: Shopper's Guide to GI Values 2006.

Eat as much fruit and vegetables as you can, they all don't have to be fresh, they can be tinned, frozen or in jars. Keep the levels of 00004000 saturated fats and alcohol down as much as possible, and be selective with the meats and fish you buy, try choosing the leaner cuts of meats and use low fat spreads and snacks for in-between meals.

Also - we think excerise is very important to take care of the body, a few short 30 minute jogs twice or more a week is enough to keep youself ticking over.

For some healthy eating is a lifestyle, for others it's a diet or a vegetable rich cooking plan. We believe healthy eating is a lifestyle of moderation and selectivity. For the best advice on healthy eating, see the governmental websites, who are the real experts on the latest in healthy eating. We like to offer our own opinions of a healthy lifestyle, however we must stress that we are not experts or trained professionals in nutrition and our opinions are merely our own personal experiences of food.

At healthy2eat.co.uk we offer our own opinions on what we think consitutes a healthy lifestyle. Firstly, we think that the quality of the foods that you put into your body will directly influence the way your body feels and operates. By eating the best produce, and limiting the amount of processed foods, low quality ingredients and artificial foods, is normally a good start to a healthy eating lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What are some good books on healthy eating for students?
I'm looking specifically for books on healthy eating habits (they can be fictional stories or the "how-to" style) for teen girls and 4th-5th grade kids. Any suggestions would be great!
    Thank you :)

    • ANSWER:
Unfortunately too many of them are purely fiction. I'd suggest any of Atkins books for a simple explanation on healthy eating habits.

Dr.Atkins was a cardiologist, low carb was a health plan easier sold as a "diet" Read any of his books for easily understandable science. Normalizing blood pressure, blood sugar, insulin, cholesterol, triglyercerides & hormone levels are all bonus features of doing a low carb way of eating.

And for the teacher, I'd suggest Lutz "Life without Bread" & Taubes "Good calories, Bad calories" both are excellent books that dispel all the nutrition myths. Although Taubes book is more for scientists a more readable concise version can be found in this article.

The American Heart Association cook book is a real winner! I love gourmet foods and eat out a lot and it is full of delicious healthful recipes that balance taste and healthiness. It isn't about dieting, just a general healthy lifestyle, to increase your metabolism naturally.

  10. QUESTION:
What's the greatest book on healthy eating ?
    Hello,
I want to eat healthy. What's the freaking bible of healthy food eating ? The black book, the manuscript ! I want one that includes some recipes as well though not necesarily. But something made by a thoroughly documented person, not some best selling fitness instructor who has written a book on food after reading a book on how to be a succesful fitness instructor. Thank you. Go eat some apples !

    • ANSWER:
Hahah there are tons of books out there on eating healthy but a lot of people have very different views. I am a personal trainer... email and I can give you some recipes and the basics to healthy eating. Here is a good article about eating healthy. Remember the less the food is tampered with the healthier it is.

  11. QUESTION:
What are some books that teach you self discipline? Especially for healthy eating?
I need to be on a strict diet for my health problems but I feel like I have no control or self discipline cause I eat a ton of junk food and i feel like I can't help it. So please give me the titles of some books that help with staying away from bad foods and to not crave them

    • ANSWER:
No such book or program exists. Self control comes from you, and you can't be taught it. All these books do is give you a temporary motivation, which fades quickly, then you buy the next book or magazine. You must find within yourself the desire to be in shape, and in your mind hold that desire above all other desires.

Clip out photos of bodies that you want to look like, and tape them up around your house. This may help to motivate you to achieve that goal.

You must develop a new "life style" -- in other words your whole life must change to this new way of eating and exercising. Its not temporary, its forever. Once you develop a new system and stick with it for a week, then it becomes habit. (After roughly 7 days doing something new it becomes a habit, and much easier.)

It can also help to have a partner, male or female, just someone who shares your goals and dedication. Then you are not just responsible for yourself, but responsible for that person as well. You don't want to let them down, so you make sure to get into the gym with them on-time (that sort of thing). Stay away from people who don't take care of themselves.

Lastly, it would help to learn the basics of exercise and nutrition, and fad magazines and fad diet books ARE NOT a good source. Perhaps take a course in exercise and nutrition, or pursue a certification in personal training, etc. You will surround yourself with people of similar mind, and you will have the knowledge to understand how diet and exercise works.

I like to tell myself, "If somebody else can do it, then I can do it too." There is no mystery or magic. Just want it bad enough, and do it.

  12. QUESTION:
How come I can't find any books on healthy living other than the one on medical problems?
I have been looking for books about healthy living. I'm trying to find ones that give testament to an organic lifestyle. One that includes no processed foods, sugars, and other things that are bad for you. All I can find are books for eating healthy to cure diseases. I don't currently have cancer or another disease, I just want to transition to a healthier lifestyle.
Does anyone know of any books like this. I would really appreciate it.

  19. QUESTION:
I have been working out for a month now, gained 6 lbs and have been eating text book healthy,... what?
I am 27, have a 3 1/2 year old and realized its time to get back down to my healthy 144. I work out 6 days a week, eat very healthy, if I splurge its a scoop of frozen yogurt and measured out. Why am I gaining weight this last month? I have always been very activate and can not put my finger on it?

    • ANSWER:
I agree you need to check how your clothes are fitting and it's great that you are in shape. You new muscles will continue to burn more calories than before and you may be just fine.

At the end of the day, even if you eat lots of healthy food, it is still calories in versus calories out. Here's some things to consider:

Have you thought about portion sizes? One quick way to measure is using your thumb to measure an ounce, such as cheese, and your fist to measure a portion size on your plate.

Are you eating five or six times a day? You need to keep your blood sugar level or you will find you are so hungry at the next meal you overeat. Try and have a little protein with each meal or snack to help you feel satisfied and nourish your muscles.

Are you feeling too deprived eating healthy food all the time, so you eat more of it out of frustration? I admire your determination at measuring out your frozen yogurt -- I am not that disciplined! Make sure food is still enjoyable, not such a chore.

I hope that helps and keep up the great work exercising -- your child will love running around with his or her fit, healthy mom!

      Best,
      Mary

    Healthy eating tips please?
Hiya, can anyone give me some tips on healthy eating please, i'd like to start eating more healthily but i get confused by food labels when a lot of 'healthy' foods seem to be high in calories or sugar. I also get confused by this whole GI diet thing as i cant get my head round how nuttella can have a lower GI than dried dates....? It boggles me lol.

I don't want to go on a diet, i'd just like some tips on healthy eating and healthy foods. Can anyone give me some tips? Also, can anyone recommend some good healthy eating books? Whenever i go into a bookshop there seems to be hundreds of books about the atkins diet, GI diet, and all the other crazy celebrity diets. I just want a book that isn't focused on losing a stone in a day lol, just something that's focused purely on eating a healthier diet without all the emphasis being on losing weight. Depending on the target age of the child, maybe something simple about self esteem and feeling good about yourself? I'm thinking this in relation to eating disorders, but that may not be so relevant if you are targeting 6 year olds.

  22. QUESTION:
Whats a good practical book about eating healthy and losing weight?
I'm a terrible cook and I'm not good at shopping for the right stuff either. Please help.

    • ANSWER:
I've heard that Dr. Phil McGraws' book is really good. It's more about gaining a healthy lifestyle, than it is about a diet. Sorry I don't remember the name. If I locate the name I'll link it in the source box below.
Think of it this way, the book will provide recipes, if you don't prepare it right / good, you will eat less. You will eventually get better at the cooking from the practice and the incentive of wanting to eat a good meal.

I have been begging him to change his diet (which is extremely poor, and responsible for his health problems). He's exhausted all the time, and continued to eat poorly, until last week. What is a good, easy to read book that will help him become educated on how the body works and how specific foods affect the different parts of your body. He's ready to make a diet change!

    • ANSWER:
13 medications is health abuse. Doctors should be ashamed of themselves when they do this to a person. I'm continually amazed at how doctors somehow believe that giving drugs to a person makes them healthy. That is "MAKE BELIEVE HEALTH."

A very good starter book is out of print, but you may be able to find it on line somewhere. It is called "Please Doctor, Do Something" by Dr. Joe Nichols. The next book that I highly recommend is called "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, Ph.D. Both of these books are designed to educate and are easy reading.

There is a video that would very good for your father to read and you can view it for free at this web site:

      http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/simply-raw-reversing-diabetes-in-30-days/

This video shows how Dr. Gabriel Cousins, a MEDICAL DOCTOR cured type 2 diabetes in 30 days in 6 people using food and detoxing. He has recently decided to expand the research to 400 people in his next study and create concise, clear documentation. Doctors will tell you that diabetes cannot be cured and that you will need to take medications for the rest of your life. That is total BUNK and complete disregard for GOOD SCIENCE. About 10% of the entire population of the U.S. has diabetes now and this can be attributed to so called modern medicine that ignores basic principals of how the body works and an agenda set by drug companies to promote drugs instead of real solutions to this problem.

Please understand that doctor created illnesses that are killing people in the United States are the number one killer, not a disease. In July 2004, Gary Null Ph.D, Carolyn Dean M.D., N.D, Martin Feldman M.D., Debora Rasio M.D., Dorothy Smith Ph.D. wrote a paper that revealed very disturbing facts regarding an annual iatrogenic (induced inadvertently by a physician or surgeon or by medical treatment or diagnostic procedures) death rate of 783,936 in one year. It is further disturbing to realize that as few as 5 percent and only up to 20 percent of iatrogenic acts are ever reported. This means that that iatrogenic death rate of 783,936 is most likely much higher.

As we look at the causes of death from degenerative diseases and other causes in America in 2004, it is obvious we are not good at solving this problem on any level.

      Heart Disease: 652,000;
      Cancer: 553,000;
      Stroke: 150,000;
      Diabetes: 73,000.

When comparing the iatrogenic acts of modern medicine in America with the statistical numbers of people dying of any particular disease, it is evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the United States. And when we look at the cost of these iatrogenic deaths, the cost is in the billions.

Drug companies have become way to powerful and dictating how medicine is researched and doctors have become technicians instead of healers. The health abuse system in the U.S. has become a political football to raise money for politicians. Huge amounts of money are funneled into politicians hands to keep the status quo on health abuse legislation. Look at the last bill that was signed into law and how the drug companies made out like bandits. All drugs damage the body. There is no way a doctor or drug company can predict drug interactions on many drugs taken at the same time because we are all different, different genetics, different lifestyles, different diets, etc. As a result many people are dying everyday from these UNTESTED drug interactions.

The body has an innate intelligence that knows exactly what to do, but if you abuse the body with eating poorly, subjecting it to chemicals, put your health in the hands of modern medicine, and treat symptoms with drugs and surgery instead of getting to the root cause of disease, you will suffer the consequences of bad health and existing on "Life support" pills to just be functional. That is no way to live and it does not have to be that way.

      good luck to you

  26. QUESTION:

One that is easy to understand, evidence based, sensible and isn't written by Gillian McKeith or Patrick Holford!

    • ANSWER:
food for sport by jane griffin. the crowood press.

  27. QUESTION:
guide to healthy, cheap eating for one?
can anyone recommend a book that has some guides to meals and eating for a person living alone without much money? I can't afford to get lots of different ingredients and stuff like that. but I find i am eating less and less healthy... rice beans cereal, things like that are all I think I can afford to keep in the house. Are there some good recipe books or healthy eating guides that take into account that we can't all keep fresh basil, organic blah blah blah, etc. in our houses.

    • ANSWER:
Rice and beans are very healthy (if not a little boring)- get some store brand salsa and mix it in to jazz it up. Also, search amazon.com for words like student cookbook, money saving cookbook, cheap cooking, etc.

  28. QUESTION:
How to make eating healthily less time consuming?
I try to eat healthily and eat three balanced meals a day - but sometimes I feel like I spend my whole life grocery shopping (because veg goes off after about 5 minutes!) , cooking, eating and washing up afterwards. I've read a few books about healthy eating, and it seems like the only way you could possibly follow those plans is if you didn't have a job, or kids or anything else to do except eat and exercise. Even then you'd have mountains of washing up to do and have to spend hours scouring the health shops for weird ingredients.
Is there a healthy eating plan/ set of tips that works for people who live in the real world and have other umpteen things to worry about than the vitamin content of dinner?

    • ANSWER:
Sure. I make it easy for myself. On a week day I'll eat like this:

      Breakfast:
Muesli with soy milk and handful of mixed seeds OR
Dried fruit (apricots/prunes) or fresh fruit with probiotic yoghurt, drizzle or honey and handful or rolled oats on top OR
Quick oat porridge with soy milk and seeds/fruit.

Leave bowl/ saucepan in sink to soak while at work.

      Lunch:

Fresh soup (1/2 carton) sainsbury or covent garden
Home made bread (made at earlier date, frozen then defrosted) or seeded roll.
Veggie sticks with houmous (bought)/ salsa (homemade)

Dinner: Fish chicken or tofu and simple steamed veg, or oven roasted med veg with grains like rice of millet or even a jacket potato or sweet potato.
      Easy stirfries with fresh herbs.

When I make curries from scratch I make LOTS, same with pasta and casseroles. Then It's either frozen, or I have it the next day for lunch and dinner again.

Snacks: Rice crackers, fruit and seed bars, fruit, nuts, seeds, little piece of dark chocolate. I also like low fat pretzels and soy nuts.

Veg does go off, so I just buy what I need when I need, doing two small quick shops a week.
Just don't fuss. Eat well, eat what you enjoy. Make sure you eat lots of different colours of food with every meal and take a multivitamin!!

    • ANSWER:
A balanced plant-based diet includes grains(breads, pasta, rice, cereal), legumes(soy, beans, peas, lentils), fruit and vegetables.
      http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/vsk/food_groups.html
      http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/
      http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/eating.html
Being vegan can be an art, one whose challenge is to take things that involve the suffering of the innocent and change them into something free of cruelty.

If you want to become a lacto-ovo vegetarian, the transition should be quite simple. Almost all meats have widely available commercial replacements. All that you have to do is replace any flesh in your diet (beef, pork, poultry, seafood) with meat analogs or just leave it out altogether.

You should keep in mind that a journey such as this can be quite short but should just be the beginning of a longer one to a plant-based diet with no animal products. This is because of the reality of factory farming in which animals that are kept alive to produce milk, eggs, etc suffer much more and longer than animals that are raised to a certain weight and then slaughtered.http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/
      http://meat.org
Some people use the word "vegan" in reference to this idea, but be aware that that applying that label to yourself should always come with the inclusion of wise activism and advocacy.http://www.veganoutreach.org/advocacy/index.html
Two extremely important examples of this are that you should never speak to someone about vegetarianism/veganism without their consent and genuine interest or as a comment on what they are eating AND your dietary beliefs should never be used as an introduction or explanation of who you are as a person. Veg*ism should be something that comes up AFTER people get to know you and they offer you a situation that makes it confusing to withhold the information/dicussion. Also, if you are presented something that you choose not to eat or you are
ordering food/eating together somewhere/picking the best place to eat.

When you you hold off on the subject until it's necessary and then act like it isn't a big deal at all, people are usually surprised and WAY more interested and curious than if you were to bring it up when someone's eating or just using it as a conversation starter.

A vegan woman can create an ENTIRELY NEW,HEALTHY HUMAN BEING INSIDE OF HER. Many of these children stay vegan and grow up to be perfectly healthy adults. So just keep yourself educated about what you eat and don't let anyone tell you that a veg diet is lacking anything essential.

Technically the term "vegetarian" does imply that you don't consume anything that comes from the body of an animal that requires killing it. Many ingredients such as gelatin and glycerin are found in many candies, Fig-Newtons, and many of other foods as well as rennet found in many cheeses.
      http://www.happycow.net/health-animal-ingredients.html
The best thing to remember is to take your time so that for example: when you are comfortable not eating beef and pork you can then give up chicken when you are sure you can make the commitment permanently.
Depending on your age or reliance on parents or regional options, it may not be best to give yourself a label. The important thing is to do your best to make progress and be committed to your compassion towards animals. Never put your focus onto what you or other people use to describe yourself.

If you meet someone that talks down to people for eating meat, dairy, etc or to you because they think they are "more veg" than you, laugh in their face and tell them they are a disgrace to the entire philosophy. People like this only hurt the idea of veg*ism AND the animals. The point of all of this is to live compassionately and and as free from cruelty as you can, all the while maintaining your health and a positive attitude. People who don't maintain either, need not open their mouths and represent our beliefs.

If you actually choose to read all of this, I hope it helps. If not, feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.

  31. QUESTION:
Can you reccommend a book on healthy eating/nutrition please?
I'd like to read a book about healthy eating/nutrition as i wanna eat more healthily, but whenever i go into a book shop there never seems to be anything just on healthy eating, its all that latest fads like the GI diet or detox your body or lose a stone in a day type crap lol. I just want an everyday healthy eating plan that tells you how much of each type of food you should eat a day and maybe some recipes and a diet plan. I like Janette Marshall's eat for life book cos that's based on the world health organisation guidelines and not faddy diets, is there anything else out there like this???
And i've read skinny bitch but i don't like it cos it tells you not to eat bread or meat. I want something that doesnt encourage you to cut large foodtypes out of your diet xx

get the book "Eat This, Not That!" its really informative and gives healthy alternatives of unhealthy food

  32. QUESTION:
Is eating healthy for the most part overrated?
I have a couple of friends who are solid with muscles. I hang out with these guys all the time. They go to the gym about 3 times a week. But they don't eat like the book would tell you to eat if you want to gain muscles. We eat stuff like Burger King, the local chicken shack , they don't eat fast food everyday but it's not like they stop eating it to maintain the shape. They been like this for 5 years since ive known them. Why is it people tell us to eat a certain way to get a certain shape when you don't really need to. For example the men in jail. Do you really think they on some kinda fancy diet but those guys be huge. Why is that?

    • ANSWER:
Because everyone is different. If i didnt eat clean i would gain more fat the muscle over a set period of time simple fact. Plus once your already at a given size its much much easier to maintain then the process it took to gain it unless of course your geneticly inclined to get bigger faster.

Everyone tells you to eat a certain way because that isn't neccasirly the best way but its the most efficent. If you were taking in an excess of calories all of them being clean every ounce give or take a couple pounds would be a solid muscle gain as opposed to any fat, But caloric excess with junk calories is setting yourself up for lots of fat.

As far as prison inmates go it comes down to one thing. Recovery ability. They cant do anything in all day accept that 1 hour of physical activity. Their recovery ability is much more then any person not imprisoned. They have 23 hours a day to recover from there last workout with nominal movement or other physical activity.

      Everyone is different.

    • ANSWER:
The following healthy living recommendations will help you if you’re trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get a diet and fitness calculator that you can put on your computer or cell phone. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
      Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
      Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Avoid “High Glycemic Load Carbs” (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:
      http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/carbohydrates.html

Do not try fad diets or diet pills. Here is an excellent food pyramid that anyone can follow: http://www.rayandterry.com/html/images/PyramidLRG.gif?osCsid=26a424be471d1337e7c2f105d5c64d9d

*3) Exercise on most days by doing cardiovascular training and/or resistance training activities.

Read a book or find a certified trainer to make sure your doing all resistance training exercises correctly. A great book to buy that teaches you the resistance training basics is “Weight Training for Dummies”. A superb magazine to buy with resistance training routines that will not get you bored is "Muscle and Fitness". Signup for the free newsletter. An excellent free online resource is at http://www.exrx.net/

A good book to buy that teaches you the cardiovascular training basics is “Fitness for Dummies”.

*4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health, and safety.

*5) Educate yourself continually on health issues and make a life long commitment to good health. A great free publication is “Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005”. A superb book to read is “You The Owner’s Manual”. An excellent periodic publication is the “Nutrition Action Health Letter”. A reputable test you can take to measure your biological age is at http://realage.com

  39. QUESTION:
How can I improve my eating habits?
What are some really effective tools to help me eat healthier?(books, logs, etc.)

    • ANSWER:
      Read.

It'll change your whole way of thinking, and by doing that, you'll be much more inclined to eat better naturally. Also, included in how it will change your way of thinking is the fact that many people - and I don't know where you're at on this - will end up changing what they think is and isn't healthy to begin with . . . this, in my opinion, is the real danger: too many people think unhealthy foods are actually healthy. You also have to do a lot of experimenting to find ways that make healthy eating as palpable as possible. Absolutely, though, the two best ways to improve your health/nutrient intake is by buying a juicer and using it and then by googling "green smoothie" (and starting to make them.) With the juicer, though, I'd sound like an infomercial if I started talking about them, so I'll just leave it at that and let you do your own research. Also, while I'm thinking about it, google and read about Ann Wigmore, Food Hygiene, and other related things. You can get some good info from these places.

With nuts, buy them out of bins, and buy most of them unsalted and unroasted - raw, that is, preferably organic - and then buy one of two little bags of nuts that are roasted and salted. Mix them all together and snack on them. Nuts are very, very good for you, and they're filling, too. This way of eating them, though, helps you reduce salt/sodium intake, and you'll find that it's still gratifying enough - that there's enough salt.

Buy wheat grass packets and mix them in purified water.

Drink purified water rather than distilled . . . distilled water is acidic. Speaking of this, most of what people eat - all processed foods, tobacco, alcohol, bread, all dairy, many fruits, all fast food, practically, all meat - is acidic. Things like cancer thrive in acidity, but cannot be present in an alkaline body. Where do we get alkalinity from? Leafy green plants, primarily, and then some other veggies, too . . . though many seem to disagree a little about where the fruit/veggie line begins and ends on acidity/alkalinity. We need balance, and most people don't have it at all, and thus the endless diseases.

To return to the above point, read "fast food nation," watch the documentary "king corn," "food, inc.," "the future of food," and other related documentaries . . . there are many, trust me. And, what this will do is close to completely turn you off to processed, industrial, corporate foods. Anything in a package is not good for you. Our bodies have evolved for millions of years on fresh foods grown from the earth w/o chemicals and picked and eaten fresh, mixed with a little fresh meat that hasn't been given antibiotics, growth accelerators and forced to stand knee deep in feces. Now, suddenly, people think it's not going to produce problems - disease - by eating things put together in factories. It's ridiculous. I only say this to illustrate the type of info you'll get into and how it'll turn you off to bad, unhealthy foods.

      Hope it helps.

What do think healthy eating is?
What do think healthy eating is? What is the first thing that comes to your head when you hear the term “healthy eating”?
(Please give tell me what YOU think not what a book or website says)
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
to me, healthy eating is when you eat all 3 macronutrients (protein, carbs, and fats) in certain predetermined ratios, and all your nutrients are from natural sources. Also, healthy eating is knowing how many calories you need to take in to maintain your weight, increase it, or decrease it. Plus, you should never exceed a certain amount of calories per meal. for me, it's 500-600 calories per meal whether i'm taking in 2500 calories to diet down, or 4500 calories to build mass.

Some healthy meals to me are

whole eggs, with egg whites, cooked in extra virgin olive oil with fruits or oats and honey

chicken breasts cooked in the oven, topped with extra virgin olive oil and brown rice

Top sirloin cooked in oven or BBQ'd with veggies and fresh fruit juice

cod or halibut cooked in oven or on foreman grill with broccoli, and some white rice and olive oil

      hope that helps

I have three of Rachael Ray's cookbooks... I make variations of her recipes everynight and they are generally very healthy.... as she so states all the time :) . But it depends on what ingredients you use... you don't need a whole new cook book. I just lost 50lbs and am working hard to keep it off, but I have learned to cut out the fat and some of the carbs... you can cut corners depending on the recipe... for instance use Extra Virgin Olive oil instead of veggie oil (I only use veggie oil for baking or for frying things) Also, cut down on the salt and season with herbs. Use leaner hamburger meat when making tacos or meatloaf. Use more fresh veggies instead of frozen... bake fried chicken instead of in a pan. The possibilites of cutting corners are endless.

  45. QUESTION:
What are some good books for the potential first time mom?
I think I might be pregnant, which has me and my husband very excited! Obviously I am going to call the doctor when I am quite certain, but I would like to make sure I am eating well from the start. Does anyone have the name of a good, general, how to eat healthy while pregnant book? I want to know what to stay away from as well as what I should be eating.
Thanks so much for your help, guys! I am going baby book shopping this weekend! Thanks for the new dad books suggestions as well.

    • ANSWER:
I like the classic "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book. I bought that one immediately after I found out I was pregnant. I also like "What to Eat When You're Expecting". One of my favorites that I read every week is called "Your Pregnancy Week by Week". I like this one so much because it shows pictures of your baby's growth which is fun and exciting and it explains what your body is going through each week. It also explains the right foods to eat and what foods to avoid.

I am also reading "The Happiest Baby on the Block" for when I have the baby. It's very good and was recommended by a lot of my friends.

  46. QUESTION:
Looking for a good healthy cook book?
I am trying to eat healthy and looking for a cook book full of healthy recipes.

My current eating style isn't good. I usually drink diet coke 2-3 times a day, eat fast food once or twice a day and sometimes i over eat.

I am a 24 male, 5'6 and weigh 178. For some reason my weight doesn't really show, i guess i hide it well hehe.

    I'll value anyone input, thanks.

    • ANSWER:
First, get off the diet coke. Artificial sweeteners are very hazardous to your health and some actually contribute to obesity. If you eat delicious, nutritious food your body will get what it needs and you won't get cravings for lousy food. Have a dark green leafy salad (like arugula with red onion, tomatoes, red bell pepper) with fresh squeezed lime juice and hemp oil. Good fats such as those found in hemp, red palm, and unhydrogented coconut are essential for the health of your immune system, skin, brain, hormones, and eyes. Stay away from white flour and white rice, and all other processed foods. Take your lunch with you when you go to work. There are many healthy recipes on the web:

      http://www.grasslandbeef.com/meat_descriptions.html
      http://www.living-foods.com/recipes/
      http://www.livingtreecommunity.com/store2/recipes.asp

Eat as many uncooked vegetables as possible, chew your food until it is a liquid before you swallow, have a couple of glasses of water an hour after you eat.

  47. QUESTION:
I need a book that is going to scare me into eating healthy...?
I just want a book, not a very long one, and I want it to in a sense "scare" me into eating healthy. I want something that is going to go into the scary details about eating unhealthy food.

    Thanks :)
I eat healthy most of the time, and I know I need to. I just want something that is going to give me the realization of how bad it is to eat unhealthy :)

  48. QUESTION:
Can anyone recommend some good books on eating with the goal of maximum energy throughout the day?
Hello all, thanks for any advice. Basically, I am looking to find either good websites, or more importantly a few good books on the subject of eating for energy rather than for weight loss or anything like that. I find I am very often lethargic during the day, and to say I do not have a healthy diet would be an understatement, so I figure that's the best place to start. :)

    • ANSWER:
For the energy prob you should have a simple blood test for the low (hypo) thyroid. It's easy and quick. You'd be surprised how a low thyroid takes away your energy.

  49. QUESTION:
What should i do if want to start eating healthy and working out...does anbody have a cycle they do or a book?

  50. QUESTION:
Good way to jumpstart healthy eating?
I'm a by-the-book kind of person, so jumpstarting a healthy diet for me takes an all or nothing type approach. Can someone help recommend a good book or "diet" that can help me get on track, back to healthy eating. It needs to be something that isn't hard to do on the road- I travel alot- and that doesn't involve tons of "Weird" ingredients that are too expensive. Example: the zone, southbeach...what have you done and what do you like?

    • ANSWER:
It's REALLY easy. Cut out the cr*p (i.e. sugar and fat) and eat 3 sensible meals (with healthy snacks such as fruit if necessary). Porridge or muesli for breakfast, sandwich or soup for lunch and then a meal with plenty of veg for tea. Cut out fizzy drinks and booze. And exercise daily if poss. Diets don't work, you simply need to eat less and exercise more - its boring to hear it all the time but it really is the only way.

Healthy Eating

Think back to when you were a child and when during the summer months, the pinnacle of cookouts and family gatherings was always the cold juicy watermelon that was for desert. When you were young, eating watermelon was about taste, but now that you're older it's more than just taste that should inspire you to eat lots of watermelon each year when the season arises. This is because watermelons have tremendous health benefits that anyone who lives a healthy lifestyle should be determined to take advantage of every year. With that said, let's take a closer look at some of these health benefits this fruit has to offer.

Health Benefit of Watermelons #1: Lycopene

Lycopene is an antioxidant found in most red-colored fruits, with the exception of a few, such as strawberries. Scientific studies have shown that Lycopene reduces the risk of prostate cancer and heart disease in people, especially men, the sex most prone to these diseases. Men who eat a diet high in lycopene are much less likely to suffer a heart attack then men who don't.

Health Benefit of Watermelons #2: Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is an important attribute to have in a healthy diet because it promotes chemicals in the brain that help people to cope with anxiety and panic, two psychological disorders that are on the rise in America today.

Health Benefit of Watermelons #3: Vitamin C

If you thought oranges were the only fruit that could provide you with Vitamin C, think again. Vitamin C is important to not only being healthy, but remaining attractive all your life. Vitamin C boosts the immune system so that you get sick less often and it also slows down aging and medical conditions such as cataract.

Health Benefit of Watermelons #4: Vitamin A

Vitamin A works much like Vitamin C, in that it helps boost immunity, but it also help your body fight off infection. It also prevents blindness.

As you can see, eating watermelon is almost tantamount to taking a multivitamin every morning, but with a much better taste. Watermelons are seasonal, which means that they are not available all year long, like fruits such as apples, which also means that when they are in season you should make sure and take advantage.

When you go to the store to purchase one you want to try and find one that is ripe and ready to eat. The best way to do this is to knock on the outside of the rind. If you hear a hollow sound then melon is ready to eat, but if you hear solid thud put it back. The fruit is over ripe and you won't be getting very good flavor from it. Buy you water melon and eat it within the first few days of getting it home. Everything about it is healthy, and in addition, it won't leave you feeling over stuffed if you eat too much.

So the next time the weather becomes warmer and summer is approaching, don't forget about watermelons. Eat up and get the extra boost they will add to your healthy lifestyle.

  2. QUESTION:
    Healthy eating?
I’m trying to eat healthy. What have you done to eat healthy? I could make a chart of what I eat. Should I watch Calories, Carbs etc. I am 13. I don’t want to loss weight or anything! I’m not anorexic! But, I would just like to watch what I eat and not over eat. But of course I don’t want to under eat or anything. Should I reward my self if I eat healthy? Like I could say I can’t go to the mall or movies or whatever until I have ate with out extra food for a week or something? You know? I just don’t know where to begin!! What would you suggest?

    Thanks, Cailin
Yeah I've been doing very little fast food anyways. But could I eat there like once a month? or less acually because we only eat at fast food places on trips

    • ANSWER:
First you have to be committed to what you are going to do like that chart idea you suggested. Make sure that you read the nutrition label and get proper serving sizes to make graphing easier i.e. a handful, half a bowl, and things like that. Meaning if you eat something eat a full serving size of it to be more precise. To keep away pounds eat only 70 grams of fat and about 3000 calories a day. That will ensure no more weight gain. The carbs provide energy ,but too many carbs can contribute to weight gain. So eat only 3 slices of bread the whole day. As for the rewards it's good to reward yourself when you accomplish your goal. If you can't meet your goal and you did your best than just stay home and plan what you will eat for tomorrow. Don't think about not eating food for any amount of days because we need at least 1000 calories a day to maintain your energy levels. Plus do it too many days and you'll get malnutrition. So, make a chart of what you eat, get precise portions, don't go over 70 grams of fat and 3000 calories, and last but not least if you over eat don't feel bad just plan what you will eat tomorrow, and if you under eat just eat anything that won't go over the limit too much or not at all preferably. This is what I think u should do for your problem.

How important is healthy eating for your fertility?
I'm planning on starting my family in a couple of years (God willing) and i've been looking at my diet now... I am slim but I do eat a lot of junk food... I have started my healthy eating regime today.

But how important is it to eat healthily, how does it affect fertility?

    Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
it is very important to eat healthily, as it is for your own health and eventually the health of your baby. you need to get all the essential nutrients, and this is not possible from a diet high in junk food. once pregnant you will feel lethargic etc, and this is because the growing baby takes all the best parts of your ingested vitamins, minerals etc, for itself, leaving you with not much, so you need to make sure you eat enough for both of you. your diet now will affect your menstrual cycle. also the diet affects the health of your body tissues. if you have a bad duet your tissues will be in poor health, so your uterus will not be in the optimum state for implantation of the foetus to take place. good luck!

  7. QUESTION:
What are some tips for healthy eating and gradual weight loss?
As of tomorow i want to start eating really healthily and avoid snacking on bad things like crisps and chocolate. Id also like to loose a few pounds.Do you have any tips on eating healthy?

    • ANSWER:
Try calorie shifting, the idea behind the diet is to instead of avoiding food, embrace it and use it to your benefit to improve your metabolism. This way you'll actually continue to burn fat even once you stop the diet.

The major problem with all diets that limit your calorie intake is that they as a result weaken and lower the effect of your metabolism on the foods you eat and actually make your body much more prone to storing calories as a result. Much like when an animal goes into hibernation, your body will go into scarcity mode and begin holding onto anything it can.

That's the main reason that people experience rebound effects from diets. Calorie shifting actually does it right because it changes the way your body utilizes food and as a result you lose weight and keep it off when you stop.

I'll throw in a link to a popular calorie shifting diet program in my source box for you to learn more about it.

  8. QUESTION:
How to promote healthy eating at a younger age ?
Okay so for my sociology class our task is to be an advocate for change in a social behavior or attitude.

I noticed that children have bad diets because they are always eating junk food and the parents bring home fast food often and/or go out to eat.

The thing i am trying to prove is that we can change these habits by promoting healthy eating at a younger age. HOWWWW???????
    PLEASE BE SPECIFIC.

    • ANSWER:
Explain the importance of healthy eating. Gradually make changes. Allow them to have noodles and other such stuff but change the way.
One thing has to be noted. If you want your children to stay healthy, you must only cook food that nourishes your child completely.
Maggie/ noodles are the skipper of all foods when it comes to some of the children. Do not worry. Serve them with hot piping noodles but don’t forget to add finely chopped/grated vegetables that you can think of.
As an alternative, add all fruits finely chopped and sliced that one can think of or as per your child’s liking. These additions not only make the noodles tasty and healthy but more presentable.

  11. QUESTION:
Eating unhealthy is too easy. What's a good tip to make healthy eating easier to do?
Fast food restaurants are everywhere. If you're low on money and hungry, you have plenty of unhealthy options and you don't even have to get out of your car. But if you want to eat healthy, it takes much more effort. Does anyone have a good tip about how to make a healthy eating routine easier to accomplish?

    • ANSWER:
The problem with fast food restaurants for the most part is even the "healthier" choices aren't that good. McDonalds uses Iceberg lettuce, the cheapest and lest beneficial kind.

On the road, try to find a Subway or Mr. Sub. A more economical choice (an healthier) is to keep a stock of healthy foods in your car or purse. Try keeping ready-to-eat cans of tuna, granola bars or even a box of cereal in your car.

For at home, it's more than just what you eat, it's how you prepare what you eat. Don't fry your chicken, grill it. Buy lean cuts of meat, and eat less pork. Avoid bacon, but subsitute for chicken or turkey bacon. A great thing is grapeseed oil. It's cheaper, healthier and better tasting than your regular olive oil.

The most important thing is to be motivated. Set a goal, write it down, put it on a post-it note on your fridge, and stick to it. Find your incentive and think about it before you eat. Lastly, always eat breakfast even if it's a small one. It will boost your metabolism, as skipping breakfast for a year can result in more than 10 pounds of weight gain.

  12. QUESTION:
how can i start eating healthy when nothing sounds good?
im 15 weeks pregnant, i was doing so good on making sure i was eating healthy but as soon as i hit week14 i started eating like an out of control 1000 pound women. grilled chicken and veggies no longer sound good. i have been eating corn dogs and cup cakes. how do i get back to my healthy eating when it doesnt sound good at all? i still crave fruit but thats the only healthy thing i've been eating. its really important to me to eat healthy and i was a little overweight before getting pregnant so i want to keep my weight gain under control.

    • ANSWER:
How about yogurt? Fruit was my major craving (they said that was a sign it would be a girl but they were WRONG!), so I found ways to work fruit into every meal. Yogurt and fruit, cereal and fruit, chicken with fresh pineapple, salads with fruit, fruit salads...it must have worked, because I only gained 25 lbs total, and I was a bit overweight to begin with, so I lost it all and then some when I gave birth. Another thing you might try is eat your fruit first, and wait a bit. If you're still hungry, THEN have that corn dog.

Good luck and congrats on the pregnancy.

  13. QUESTION:

I have 2 toddlers and a husband and we started eating organic and whole foods about a year ago. This year we still seemed to get the stomach virus, but no one has thrown up at all. It just seems the stomach virus has been much much milder. Has anyone else experienced this? Could our healthy eating really be holding back the stomach virus?

    • ANSWER:
      I think you are lucky.
Eating a good mixed diet, good Hygiene and not getting stressed are two things that contribute to good health and resistance to disease.
Preparing your own meals with good ingredients certainly helps but good food doesn't have to be organic. The jury is still out on that one.

I hope you continue to resist all viruses that lurk around.

I'm soooo fussy when it comes to food - I'm not too keen on fruit - I'll eat the odd apple from time to time but that's about it. I don't like nuts or seeds to some extent & every healthy eating article says about snacking on nuts, seeds & fruit. Can anyone recommend anything else which helps you to loose weight but isn't fruits/nuts or suchlike?

    • ANSWER:
Fruits, nuts and seeds belong in the carbohydrates section. Fruits also gives you fiber. Nuts and seeds give you protein too. You'll need replacements.
You need the basic three nutrients in food: carbohydrates (a type of sugar), fats and proteins.
You can replace the fiber you get from fruit by eating more vegetables or whole-grain products. You should eat about 25 grams of fiber a day for healthy eating.
Fruit, nuts and seeds can be replaced as carbohydrates by potatoes, cassava, yams, taro, dried peas, dried beans, grains, rice, sugar, milk, candy. I recommend milk. It gives you fat (giving you more energy) and it contains calcium and protein too! That could be your protein replacement.
I hope I helped. If you need some recipes to find out what you can eat as a fussy eater try these sites. All the recipes are healthy and contain information about the nutritional value. That way you can see how much of each nutriet you're eating everyday.

    • ANSWER:
      >> 14 and my mom thinks Im too young to be eating organic/healthy. <<

      Wow... just... wow!

Of course you should eat healthy at any age! It is especially important for children to eat healthy. It really breaks my heart when I see obese mothers feeing their obese toddlers cola and junk food... argh!

You need healthy, wholesome food for your growing brain and body. What you do now plays a role in your health as an adult, especially when you become old. Do you want to be sick all the time? No, of course not! That's why you have to eat healthy!

Now, that doesn't mean you can't have "junk" once in a while. Moderation is the key.

  31. QUESTION:
What are the best ways to motivate an obese person to a lifestyle of fitness and healthy eating?
We all heard of the saying, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink it." I believe there is a way to motivate the horse to drink. In this case, its a lifetyle of fitness and healthy eating which is conducive to a more healthy longer life. Therefore, I am looking for serious answers. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
An obese person feels the urge to eat often because he/she feels as though it brings a moment of happiness. Sure being fat isn't but a slice of cheesecake or a cookie certainly does. In order to motivate a person to eat healthier and choose a more activate lifestyle, you have to make it rewarding for that person to do so. This is not a quick diet and workout but a lifetime commitment and change of style.
One of the biggest factor you have to remember is that the obese person has been programmed to turn to food for many underlining issues. Some may be "I get a cookie/sweet when I am good." "When I am bored and there's nothing to do, I eat." "I feel so empty inside, so unhappy, I might as well eat this cookie to make me happy." You have to get ride of these old programming before the obese person has any chance of losing weight permanently.
Then you have to reprogram the person to enjoy food in a nutritional way and attach happiness to exercise and having fun. If the workout is no fun, why would a person want to coninue doing it? Maybe try tennis, skating, swimming or something fun.
And remember that it takes 30 days to make a habit of something. Good Luck.

  45. QUESTION:
Does healthy eating programs in schools trigger eating disorders?
I've heard from a former anorexic that she says the healthy eating programs and the banning of chocolates and junk food is wrong as she says "we were taught there are no bad foods". But surely healthy eating helps cut down on obesity but does it also cause eating disorders? What do you think should be done?

    • ANSWER:
I think its great that schools teach about healthy eating and i think it does more good then bad, however i do think they need to be careful about how they teach it.
Children and teens can be very impressionable and if they already have the idea that they should look like the people in magazines then it may only take another few factors to trigger an eating disorder.
I think schools should concentrate on the positive effects of a healthy eating and exercising rather then linking certain foods and body types with negative ideas. for example by describing chocolate and crisps etc. as 'bad food'. Kids can sometimes take this kind of thing too literally and may try and cut out 'bad foods' all together.
I think the main things that need to be taught are nutrition rather then diet (ie dieting) and cooking skills. Also the idea that all food is there to be enjoyed, and can be done so healthily in moderation without feeling guilty!
Sorry for the rather long answer but its a subject i feel rather strongly about.
